good deal at wild imports

$425 for 40lb.+ naval cannon until sept 15. I don't know if their liners are seamed or not but that looks to be a lot of cannon and carrier for 4 and a 1/4. Little out of my budget right now for what I want to begin with, but down the road...

IMHO, the main drawback to their guns is that the brass is cast around the liner instead of being cast solid, bored and sleeved.

Sometimes this method works OK but sometimes it can be a disaster waiting to happen. I don't know about all of their guns but on a couple I've seen, the liner was only 1/8th to 3/16th thick and I have no idea how they put in a breech plug in.

Now, I certainly can't vouch for the integrity of the various cannon and mortars sold by Wild Imports but I do note that they have usually set up most of their products at the Wannenmacher Tulsa Gun Show for the past few shows and they seem to always have a crowd checking out their various products.
By the end of the two day show, just about all the samples they brought along have either found their way to new owners homes or they have been marked SOLD.  I'll have to check out their liners to see if they are or are not seamless and how their breech plugs are applied. Their wood bases on the mortars always seem just a little on the cheap side and that wood is stained some crappy walnut looking color - IMHO.  They bring quite a bit of stuff to the show and prices do seem to be fairly reasonable to me  - again IMHO.  Blaster (Bob in So. looking through their website again and read on one of the mortars, it said that the start with a steel liner welded shut and so on, I don't know if they do that with all of their cannons but most likely they do. So I guess the answer is seemed.

I think the "welded shut" reference means that a breech plug has been installed in the liner.

That would not be a strength issue over time, or would it?

You're banking on the welds not breaking after many many rounds.  If they did it right - with a certified welder and the right temperature controls and perhaps xray certification of the welds it could be that the strength is NOTHING to worry about.  IF....

On anything serious that I do - I DO NO welding on the barrel.  On the other hand, there are folks that use certified welders and GOOD DESIGN and build very strong shootin' irons.

People have also have to remember that just because a welder is certified dosen't mean the welds will be top notch. It means he passed a test once. Also Who certified him? Joe Blows Welding could have their own cert. tests that their welders have to pass and they might not be up to par with other's. Just something to think about.
