What scope do you have on your 243 Ultra Varmit or Heavy Barrel?
What do you use it for and what type of ammo do you use?

I bought one for the wife to use deer hunting out of a box stand and am looking to scope it and start shooting it.

I have a Tasco 6-24x44 with fine crosshairs and an 1/8 dot reticle. Works fine for me and my varmint control.
You will find most H&R/NEF 223's like the lighter grain bullets due to the rate of twist. The Winchester White Box 45gr JHP usually shoot the best. So you might want to give a heavier bullet a try, but I wouldn't expect too much. My Ultra hates the heavy stuff, but feed it some WWB 45gr and it does the job over and over.

EDIT TOO- originally I though it was a 223? I guess the author changed it.

I wouldn't recommend the WWB 45gr JHP for deer, they're meant for varmints. If you're just going to hunt deer with it, a good 3-9x is all you'll need. Most of us don't hunt deer with a .223, just varmints and predators, so we'll have more scope on em than what you would need, I have a 5-20x40 on mine.

EDIT: Hmmm???? The question asked was about a .243 not a .223...guess I just followed Myamor's lead!!  I have a Mueller 4-16x50IGR scope on my .243, but it's intended for long range coyote hunting. I'd still recommend a good 3-9x scope for deer hunting, it's more than enough and won't break the bank.

I hope I didn't insinuate deer hunting with the WWB 45gr. Probably not a good idea. What I meant was a few or the members here have luck with the heavier bullets like 62gr and up, and to try out your rifle and see how it likes them. Most don't but there have been a rare few that have.

Before everyone else gets confused :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D . For your 243 I would recommend a Mueller scope. Even though i don't have one i have heard GREAT things about them. As for the ammo. NEF's seem to like the lighter bullets. 85-95gr. for deer. Some will shoot the 100s but not all. hope this helped.
