barrel slugging
« on: September 10, 2005, 02:17:53 PM »
I ordered a H&R 38/55 Classic rifle from Walmart and have not got it yet, but I read about slugging the bore at the Surplus Rifle website. The method shown is well defined,  putting a sinker down the barrel end. I was wondering since this rifle can be torn down to the barrel if anyone goes through the breech end instead. They are doing this on military rifles that don't allow you to go in through the breech. I have never done this before, and I would like it done right because I plan to load my own shells. I know I can do this with no problem, I am just  not up on the proceedure. By the way, I called the other day and the lady called Sports South and they said another 2 months before the gun would be here. I e-mailed SS, but got no reply. Why does it take 3 months for a gun to get from Mass. to NY? Thanks for all onfo on the bore slugging. Gordy.

Here's a link to bore slugging if you want a little more info.

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinSlug.htm

Fred recommends checking the bore at both end, run the sinker in few inches, then place a dowel against it, then pancake it with another dowel in that spot, then drive it out, one on the breech end and another on the muzzle end. Hopefully the muzzle end will be slightly smaller.

It isn't that it takes that long to get the rifle shipped, Sports South doesn't have any in stock right now, same for the BC, it's been that way for months....If you get an opportunity to buy one locally, better take it!! You can check Sports South inventory yourself....
