Opinions wanted on 45/70
« on: August 17, 2005, 03:43:18 AM »
Betcha cant guess why I want one
I dont want to start the old traditional vs modern fight but the state is kinda given us some leway to run with.

I currently shoot a 2yr old NEF Huntsman and it shoots well.  I have never been a muzz fan but took advantage of the longer season with it. Also the antlerless deer you can take with them help fill the freezer.
The cleanup and mess does not seem worth the trouble.  The 45/70 idea is very appealling, which is what the state wanted. I believe.

Would you guys take up the 45/70?  This is not from the tradition or modern view.  I just want to know if you guys had a special season that allowed the use of one, is it worth buying one?
I have a SB2 frame that can be fitted with the barrel, so the cost would be under 100.00, i figure.

What is the hunstman worth?

Thanks to all.
Jeff

Jeffery,
In addition to enhancing your hunting you will find the 45/70 is absolutely one of the most enjoyable rifles to shoot that you have ever had.I started off getting a 45/70 barrel fitted to one of my receivers and then bought a Buffalo Classic.
The recoil is not the awful experience which is perceived by most.In fact it is quite enjoyable if you do not load it really "hot".And with a 45/70 you do not have to load it all that powerful for it to be effective both at the range and hunting.I hunt with my 45/70 more often than I do with any of my other rifles.
You have a choice of bullets all the way from 300 gr. up to 500 gr.
I think anyone on this forum will substanciate my views.

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Absolutely, yes.  That's the easiest question I've heard asked in quite awhile.  :)  Far more range, significantly more accuracy, significantly more dependability in inclement weather.  Yes, yes, absotively, posilutely.  If your goal is to fill the freezer, as you say, and not be traditional.

I guess I just dont get all pumped up on the thought of ffg and a flintlock along woth fringed buckskin clothing. {is that primitive enough :-) }

I enjoy being out in God's creation and taking a deer or two a year to help feed the family something other than mad cow beef!!!
If I can enjoy that time with  a reliable ,safe firearm that is all the better.

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff send er in & do IT don't wait you will not be disappointed

I love mine & need a BC but that will take a little more time I am afraid that will have to wait , I would get a good recoil pad though. Have another deal in the works may have to send in for a BC barrel but I like the forend on them so I need a whole gun I don't know but I want one seems to me you NEED one :D

Good luck

Try this.

This rifle will shoot with the equvelancy of a .45 long colt 250 grain bullet at 1500 fps all the way up to a .45 cal 550 grain slug over 120 grains of ff.  All in one slick little package

Jeff:

The 45-70 is one of my all time favorites....and I too would recommend you sending your frame in for one.I'm not a MZ fan 4-sure..but I don't have anything against a person using one to hunt with...I am also not a fan of mediocre loads for the 45-70...every one of the modern firesarms I have had...all shoot 2 paticualr loads well...I started loading them when I got my first one...1 is a 405 grain.. Cast Performance WLNGC...to about 1900fps..the other is a 300 grain Nosler Partition it runs out at 2400fps...both are loaded "hot"..to some to maximize the guns range.I took a dandy 10 pointer with the Nosler handload a few years back...the buck went a couple feet and piled up...Another load I just tried in my Handi...is the Federal's 300 grain Hot core...it shot almost as good as the Noslers...and isn't bad at all to shoot at 1900fps...

The 45-70 is one you'll love after shooting after a-while...and while you don't have to load it up...eventually you will "just to see"...I will reccmmend a Limbsaver recoil pad...and a good cheek piece...it will make it more enjoyable to shoot...and when you start reloading it...a good set of dies...a Lyman "M" die for expanding the necks perfectly(no buldges)...and a Lee factory crimp die...You'll be amazed at it's power and how well it shoots out of the Handi...

DO IT !!!!  I have taken 2 deer and 2 hogs with the 45/70.  It doesn't need to be loaded to  max. to do the job. I took a 180 lb. boar hog after the bullet went through a small 5 inch tree, ( didn't see the tree in all the excitment ). The was done pushing a 405 gr. rem bullet at 1320 fps. Plenty of power. Youll love it. It's all I hunt with in the close woods of Pa.
