Tang or peep stule sights for Marlin 336CS
« on: August 05, 2005, 06:01:35 AM »
Hey folks. I am considering going to a tang or peep sight on my Marlin 336CS 3030. Thing is, I don't have a clue as to which companies make them, or if I need to change the front sight post, or whatever. Gun has the original factory Marlin sights, but I also have a Buck Ridge fixed 4 power scope on it. Any of you cats out there use one of these kind of sights? I am  used to using a peep sight from shooting m16A1 rifle when I was in the Army. I think the tang style looks kind of neat on there though. How difficult is installation? Any information you can offer will be appreciated.

Check Williams or Lyman for sights for the Marlin.  I have one on my 444 and it just screws into the holes already there in the receiver.

Can't help with the tang sight, never used one and it looks like it would get in the way.
On my 336, I put a Williams FP peep sight with the disc removed, and a front fire sight with no hood, great combo, and very fast. You can see the fire sight before your target in low light. The only thing better in real low light is a low power scope.
With the Williams FP, you will probably need to put in a taller front sight, I think you need one about .450 high or whatever comes close to that, the .375 was too short on my 70's model.

Except for nostalgic reasons, I wouldn't get a tang sight. They are extremely subject to damage. I have one on this 336CB and for that particular application, it's great......but, for a working rifle, I would get a receiver sight......like the one you see here on my 39A Marlin.

This is my opinion......yours may differ.

No way I would put a tang sight on a 336 in 30/30. That sight would just be too close to my face for comfort, especially for a hunting gun where different body positions (including prone!) might happen. I have a Williams FP receiver sight on my 336RC in 30/30 with a Lyman 17A front sight. Short of a scope, I can't think of a more accurate sight setup. I currently have a 1" diameter aperture with a .050" hole in the receiver sight, but that's only for target work. I like the Williams Twilight apertures in either 3/8" or 1/2" diameters with .093" holes for hunting.

I also would vote for the receiver sight.  I have a 336 with a variable scope, but the little 357 has the Williams Fire Point, only I used a green insert.  Great setup.

The problems with the tang sight that I see are 1. It looks like it gets in the way, when you grip the rifle it would be right in the web space of your hand. 2. For a hunting rifle, I dont think it would be practical. 3. The cost, a tang sight like a Marbels will run about $125.00

I have several of the Williams sights and hunt with them all the time. I have never had a problem with them. Midway has the 5D on sale for $29.00 right now. I would give the williams a try.

Great Photo Album Hog!

I was only about 9 when those shots were taken, but I traveled  to Viet Nam and Cambodia on a business venture in 1997, and got to see that country, intimately- in the cities, mountains, and jungles, and was amazed by the lifestyle of these people, and gained a great respect for them.

Not at all the backwards savages our government told us they were back then.
