NEF heavy barreled 308 - easily scoped?
«

Thinking about getting a tack driving bull barreled rifle in 308, and wonder if perhaps this would be a good and economical choice. I already have an 8-32x scope, but the thing's huge and long. Looking at the hammer, it looks like it may interfere, and the mount doesn't look too long. Any good way to deal with this or should I be picking another rifle for such a setup? I do prefer bolt actions, but this is a third the price of a Remington 700 VLS.

Your scope should work of you get the medium rings but it might take high rings. Leupold or burris signature zee rings should be good.

You can get an Ultra rail that is an inch longer than the standard rail, cost is about $15, part #R00503....

I have a Survivor 308 which I put a Choate stock and forearm on..........have a 3X9X40 Burris FullField II on it. Used medium rings ( I think), had no problems. The Choate stock really reduces recoil for me...ordered one for my 45-70 too!

I bought one for my daughters, and they shoot very well with it. I put a 3-9x40 Tasco with medium weaver rings. I had to add a slip on recoil pad to soften the recoil. I worked up a nice 130 gr load so they can enjoy shooting it.
The only complaint I have is that the 3d Shot is an outlyer unless I let the barrel cool. The first two shots will touch.
This is not a problem for hunting, just hot days on the range. The short length of the survivor makes it easier for my girls to handle. The longer bolt action rifles I have are longer and harder for them to hold up accurately for any length of time.
I have to admit, I like it too!

Graybeard's is a great place full of folks quite knowledgeable about sporting arms. I'm trying to get more familiar with that side of things as I start take targets, animal and graphical, more seriously.

Same here, I have used the Weaver Quad Lok highs and they work great for most all my scopes. Just kinda depends on the rear bell, ya know.
Sometimes you have to improvise.

Simmons gives the quad lock rings away with the ATV scopes, several pairs have been given away on RFC to the first person who pms for em, they aren't very good rings, I threw 3 pairs of em in the trash, they're a good way to ruin a scope. :?

Oh-well they work for me man.
3 questions-
-How's about sending them to me the next time you are about to trash them? I could always use them  .
-What is the RFC you are refering too? I'll send them a PM, extra rings are a nice thing to have around.
-And how is Simmons giving them away with the ATV scopes? They discontinued those a while back?

The ATV can still be bought on Ebay frequently....apparently the OEM that built them is still building them or has recently, that and the WTC18 which Midway still had on sale for $100 last week.
RFC =
www.rimfirecentral.com
I wouldn't give them away, not to someone I liked, anyway, they're pretty poor rings, aluminum ta boot. If they were steel, they wouldn't be so bad even though the design can't be good for a scope's health, I value my scopes more than to put ring marks on em. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of scope problems blamed on the scope mfr are caused by improper mounting and cheap rings.

Sometimes you have to live within your means. Took me a while to learn that.
A lot of people can't afford to spend $30 for rings.
Especially if they have been saving up to buy a new Handi. In which is still a big factor H&R/NEF still has going for them=price.
Do what you can with what you got. Sometimes it comes down to that.

Sometimes going cheap in one area means you have to pay more in another. Case in point - Spent less on a Savage Rifle in 300 RUM, but had to pay more in ammo than 300 Wby in a Vanguard. That is, until Remington realized they were selling 300 Wby ammo for less than their competing 300 RUM, and switched the prices around.

True enough. If my rings don't hold then I'll swap them out. Untill then, I'll keep 'em on I guess.
And your right about the ammo.
Sorry to highjack your thread there BRG3.
So any way you didn't ever say what you are thinking about the 308 Survivor? Put that bad boy in layaway. If you aren't happy with it there are many people here that would love to have the parts, barrel, receiver and stock.
Or you could almost get your money back out of it if you slap a cheap scope on it and eBay the barrel. They are fetching some unreal prices there.
What do you have to loose?

Such a rifle would be in the future, as I have other gun projects and expenses in the short term.
Can anyone quantify their accuracy with such rifles?
