Hey there guys,

Could someone tell me what king of accuracy to expect from the new 7,62x39 handy shooting the russian ammo (barnaul, wulf, silver bear)??

My .223 handy would consistently shoot under 2" groups at 100yds using the Barnaul 55gr .223 FMJs.  I was wondering if the 7,62x39 wolud shoot as good?

If my experience with Russian 7.62X54R surplus is any good you will get at least 5 inch groups at 50 yards.  Larry

Hello Vlado,  Welcome.

You might check around the site for info regarding this.  If I recall correctly, some guys are not having much success shooting military ammo from their Handi's.  Also, I don't believe NEF recommends using military or military spec ammo in their firearms.  From what I've read the 7.62X39 is an accurate round and is in the .30-30 class as a big game round.  There is non-military, commercial brand ammo available.  

If you have one or decide to get one and try the mil spec ammo, be carefull with using corrosive ammo.  Particular cleaning methods are needed.

As far as the big Russian goes, I have no problem getting 2-3" groups from either of my Mosins (91-30, M-38) at 100yds.  Each are in issue form with no modifications.  I typically use Olympic and Win white box ammo.

Vlado,
There are several posts on this subject;  a search for surplus ammo should bring them up .  The short answer is that the military surplus stuff needs a harder firing pin strike to ignite the primer.  This is my recollection of the posts on the subject I have no experience with this combination of handi and milsurp ammo.

NEF says not to use non-SAMMI spec'd ammo in the Handi's...and there isn't any mil-surp ammo loaded to SAMMI specs as far as I know...

When handloaded to tight tolerances the x39 is a very accurate cartrige. My CZ527 carbine will shoot 3/4" groups all day long with handloads. But with wolf 154gr sp rhe groups open up to 3" or so. I would expect the Handi to do just as well.

Some of you said I shouldn't shoot russian made 7,62x39, and some of you have had misfires and poor accuracy.  But  I have shoot over 1000 rds of russian barnaul and wolf in my .223 handy without a single misfire or ejection problem.  Accuracy like I mentioned earlier is OK.  I just don't see why the 7,62x39 handy wouldn't do as good with russian rounds  given that the .223 has been flawless.

If you have some Wolf ammo in 223 and 7.62x39, put them side by side.
You will notice the primers are set deeper in the 7.62 round than the 223, which will be flush with the case. Thats why you probably never had any problems with misfires in your 223 shooting Wolf ammo, I haven't either.

Two things ,

First , The mil. spec 7.62 x 39 was designed to function semi and full auto weapons in less than perfect conditions , therefor the pressures are much higher .

Second , The mil standards for group size are not even close to what a benchrest or varmit shooter will need , The U.S. Mil. will except 2 in groups at 100 yards as good enough .

With the proper handloads or good factory ammo the 7.62 x 39 will give sub 1 in at 100
