shooting .45 thru .410

Like the subject implies, I want to try .45 loads through my .45/.410 contender bbl. I realize I must remove the "choke", but I'm unsure if I must replace it with an open non ribbed choke, or just shoot it with the threads exposed. Is there a piece I'm missing for my barrel? Any input would be appreciated.

once you remove the choke put it in a  safe place no worries about the treads. how ever you must put choke tube lube on the choke tube before you place it back in the barrel (after it has been cleaned) If you shoot a 410 shell trough the choke tube with no lube you will have a very hard time getting it back out.
do not expect great accuracy with the 45 colts. I can get about 4" at 50 yards with mine, but I have the normal open sights and not a vent rib.

When I hunt with my 10 inch 45-410 I always carry a few 454 colts and a wrench never know when you may need something litle bigger then a 410.
BTW you must remove the choke tube before you shoot buck shot and slugs.

My barrel likes a heavy bullet at a pretty good clip..I load a 300 grain XTP and a 300 grain hard cast bullet at around 1100 fps..got the data from the Hodgdon website..My barrel doesn't like 250 or lighter for some reason.

I use a lee 255 gr flat point round nose with minbe cast from wheel weights and sized to .452

So how do you get one of those stuck chokes off of a barrel?

I have an older octogon 45/410 barrel with the external choke which I have been unable to remove to shoot bullets or slugs. Any idea's on how to remove the choke now? any help appricated.

I'm not very familiar with the older, external chokes, but I would think that if you could get some Kroil or other good penetrating oil on the threads, that it would help alot.  After it soaked awhile I would gently tap around the choke with a leather mallet or wooded dowel, maybe that would loosen it.  If all else fails, contact T/C for their recommendation.

I am glad I could get my hands on a real .45 Colt octogon barrel.  It is not a .410 and there is no choke tube.  It took me a while to find one , but it was worth it.  

I shoot a 300 gr. XTP HP with 19 grs. of WC 820 pull down powder (H108).  It is very accurate out to 75 yards with open sights.  I just got it this year so she ain't ben in the woods hunting yet.  Will give it a try this fall.   :wink:

barrels i plan on using 1 strictly as a 410 and remove the rear sight on it. I plan to use the other as a 45 long colt/45 mongo barrel without the choke.
