monte carlo with iron sights
« on: August 22, 2005, 10:49:28 AM »
hopefully you guys can help me out.  I have a Handi .223 (scoped) with a monte carlo stock.  I want to send the receiver in and get a .22 hornet barrel fitted (it is my understanding that they come with iron sights).  My question is...will the monte carlo stock that I currently have work in conjunction with the open/iron sights on the hornet barrel or will the stock's cheekpiece be too high?

More than likely the stock will be too high. You can ask for the barrel to have a scope rail instead of iron sights.

The montecarlo stock is too high for me to use with irons.  I switched mine (it came to me with irons and scope; I removed the scope) to a buttstock off of a shotgun.

You can order a plain buttstock from NEF or go to the classifieds and pick one up there if/when somebody posts one for sale.

Not all monte carlo stocks are created equal, this laminated pallet wood stock that came on my 204 ruger is perfect for the WGRS sight on the 45-70....other MC stocks that I have are too high.

On the other hand, not all straight or pistol grip stocks are right either, this shotgun stock on my scoped BC beats the heck out of my cheek with heavy loads...

I suspected that was the answer!  I havent checked...but will the stock on my sidekick fit on my handi rifle?  Or even the stock on my pardner shotgun?

Tim:  Your scoped .45/70 BC is the coolest!  Where did you get that beautiful buttstock?  It looks like very expensive walnut and goes so well with the forend.

When I hold the BC or Target .38-55, I simply can't get used to the straight stock.  It feels so awkward.  However, your's would be the way to go.

Thanks!! It's a Topper Deluxe checkered walnut youth shotgun stock from Brownell's. Inside the Galco recoil pad is the standard H&R recoil pad.

Thanks for the link.  I would like to buy a walnut stock for my SB2.  The one I currently have has the Whitetails Unlimited medallion (which I love), but I'd like a walnut one with no medallion, BUT with a buttpad already installed.  Do they make such an animal??

I think they make an uncheckered walnut stock, but I don't know if it's as fancy as the Topper Dlx stock, the 2004 Retail list only shows black finished stocks. A call or email to Jennifer at H&R would answer that question.
