encore stock and forearm
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:55:13 PM »
I just recieved a new laminated stock and foream for my encore and have a few  quistions  pertaining to fitting.  I have glass beded one piece stocks but no two piece.
 1. None of the mounting screws are long enough to attach the new items. Do i just drill the screw holes deeper or get longer screws?
 2. The barrel channel on the forearm is sloppy, do I glass bed the whole barrel channel or just around the monting screws and the  foreamr tip to give it a piller effect or do I just put the rubber warshers under the barrel?
 3. The stock seems to have a lot of side play in it also, should I glass bed that ?
 Thanks for your help
be safe and god bless

I don't think you would gain anything by glass bedding your Encore.  I have contenders and get great accuracy by doing nothing with the buttstock and putting a couple stainless washers under the forestock.  You don't have the mass of a one piece stock putting pressure on your action and barrel.  IMHO the more critical fit is metal to metal where the barrel and frame lock up.  That needs to be tight.

The inletting on stocks such as yours needs the final fitting.  By inletting the stocks deeper perhaps the inletting will tighten, although normally the inletting is tight enough that the metal won't start easily.  I've not worked with the TC's hinge action.  With a No.1 I would bed the forearm tightly to the forestock and just off the front of the frame. The buttstock needs to be tight or the recoil will split it.  If the forearm screw hole is too shalloow perhaps inletting it a bit deeper is a better idea.  The buttstock should also be inletted a bit deeper and if still loose it too should be bedded to solidly fit the frame.

Thanks guys, I started the project tonight by getting the barrel worked in to the foream more and now have it to where the screws are getting a good hold on the barrel. By the time I get rid of the hight spots I should have plenty of thread into the barrel to allow either the warshers or a little glass.  On the stock I tried a longer screw and was able to tighen it down  and there was no movement in it then so I think I'll just glass it as is and stay with the longer screw.
