TVM Flint Locks-thumbs up or down?
« on: July 10, 2005, 05:07:14 AM »
As an option I am looking into TVM (Tennessee Valley Manufacturing) products.  I am interested in their Southern Rifle.  Has anyone had experience with their rifles and could related to me their quality and service?
I really would appreciate inputs on this. :D

:D i have  a southern po-boy made by garner when he was still in union city and i can say that is of as good  quility as any on the market. after jack  started another business jacks stocks and he turned tvm over to matt avance who has worked for jack for many years .and today the quility of there guns is at the top .these are as close as you can get to a true custom pc without having to pay an arm and leg for it. i have ,through the years purchased many firearms from tvm and as of yet have not had one that was not  absoluty outstanding in quility workman-ship and accurcey and at the price what more could you expect although there are many gun builders in the market ,but  if you want a fine rifle at a decent price you can`t -do better than tvm. :)  :)

I have to ditto what tom says about their quality.  I have a Jack Garner signed Leman, flint in 54 and the only thing I can say is that I can't shoot it as well as it is capable.  Fine rifles.

Here's a question.  Whats the difference between Tennessee Valley Manufacturing (TVM), and Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading (TVM)?  They are separate web sites with different phone numbers, but they are both out of Corinth Mississippi.  Are they the same company or affiliated?

Here's the skinny as I understand it, unless I get it backwards.   Jack Garner started TV Manufacturing several years ago and built a fine rifle and reputation.  Matt Avance, who worked for Jack for years, acquired TV Manufacturing and carried on the business.  I don't know why Jack got out. After a few years Jack got back into manufacturing muzzleloaders and started TV Muzzleloading.   That's the story I've heard from many, many different people so it's heresay.  Whatever the reasons both firms build fine firearms.

I have no knowledge of any affiliation or lack thereof between the two firms.

I may have the TV Manufacturing and TV Muzzleloading swapped in their chronology.

Which "TVM" should I go with?  TVM-manufacturing or TVM-muzzleloading?  I am interested in a "Southern Rifle" in flint, but not a poor boy version of it.

That's almost like asking a fella which woman he should marry!!!  See which company builds a rifle most to your liking.  If both do, and you're willing to wait, flip a coin, neither would be wrong.  You gotta make that decision.  I'd be perfectly happy with either company's rifle.

Rodger that!  I'll contact both to get some answers and quotes.  I'll let you all know how it goes in time.  Thanks a bunch y'all.  "I'll...be back"!

Oh, one more question!

Concerning a Green Mountain barrel in .54, what would be the max charge of FF in a 15/16" barrel, and what would be the max charge recommended in a one inch barrel? Since Green Mountain barrels are used in the TVM Southern Rifles.

I'm not certain what the max charge is in either barrel but both will digest 100 grs. of FFg and if you need more than that in 54 cal. you need a bigger hole in the barrel!!

Sharpes4590,

I am thinking of going 50 cal in a 42X7/8 inch barrel.  I am looking in to the weight aspect of the long barrel, and as we all know a .50 will drop a deer with no problem (proper shot placement ect ect).  The slimmer barrel I think would be more fitting of the Southern type of Mountain rifle.  It will also have a long tang (Not loli pop) and a chevron type trigger guard, all iron. It will NOT be a Poor Boy.   So, what do you think of the 42"X7/8th" barrel in .50 cal (octagon of course)? AND I sure would like to have more of an option over the banana Type patch box (don't like it).  Matt at TVM says he has his manufactured Square type.  Any inputs to a patch box?

PS  :  As for the lock a large Siler...I ain't sweating it.

Ain't a thing wrong with a 7/8,  50 cal. barrel.  I'd probably do the same thing for the same reasons.

I don't really have any inputs as to which patch box but I do have my opinion, and it's worth what you pay for it.  I've never had a patch box on any of my Southern Mountain or Tennessee Rifles but if I did I'd have the bananna style.  I do like them.  Honestly, patch boxes don't interest me much on that style rifle.  When we start talking Pennsylvania rifles then I want one. I honestly don't know what else would be correct for that period and style of rifle.  Hopefully someone else has the knowledge you seek.

You must be about ready to order one!!!!  Good luck!

I decided on not going with a patch box!  I went with the Super Premium Maple, why cover it up?  Not to mention it was common in many long rifles not to have a patch box, not just "Southern Kentuckies".
I have been visiting other tradition muzzle loading forums and I am getting some negative feed back as to the correctness on using a large Siler lock on a Southern Kentucky,  or southern mountain rifle.  Whats your opinion on this?
Also, since I have ordered the TVM (Muzzle loading) Southern Rifle in 7/8X42" in .50-Green Mountain, what would be the MAX charge in this barrel?
I have been so used to using a Lyman GP .54 in percusion (RB) for the past 13 years or so using FF, that I am not used to the .50 cal!  Recommendation to the use in FF and FFF in the 7/8th or .50 are also most appreciated!

The wood will be very nice and I agree with you in that it would be a shame, if not a sin, to cover it with a patch box.  Honestly, I've never used a patch box to hold or carry anything....but they shore are purty on some rifles.

I'm not the best person to ask about what's period correct regarding lock styles.  It isn't that I don't care, it's that I don't know!!!!!  Just briefly checking it appears that a Manton & Ashmore lock by L & R, a lock I like better than the Siler, or a Ketland late era lock would be correct.  They aren't too dissimilar in appearance and personally I like the rain proof pan of both.  Run those two locks by the folks who know those things and see what their response is.  I'm kinda curious myself.

I've owned several 50's over the years and to the best of my recollection all of them would digest 90 grs. of either Ffg or Fffg with equal aplomb, given the right patch/ball combination.  With the 7/8 barrel I'd probably try to make Ffg work simply because it operates at lower pressure.  Velocity will most likely be lower than a Fffg load but will certainly be adequate.  90 grs. was also my hunting load and any deer-sized game within reasonable shooting distance was meat on the table.  I have no knowledge of what a max load would be in that particular barrel.  I've never needed a max load in any handgun or rifle I've owned, smokeless or black.  My experience is that max loads aren't necessary, are almost never the best balanced load, consume more powder than necessary to achieve the desired result and cause undue and unecessary stress on the firearm......and sometimes the shooter!  A max load can sometimes be the most accurate load but just as often is difficult to make accurate.  As with all firearms there is never an "always" or "never" when it comes to shooting and loading them.  I don't believe I'd get too hung up on max loads.  I'd try to achieve the best balanced, or optimum load.

Sharps4590, you have it backwords, TVMuzzleloading is the company Jack Garner started years ago and turned over to Matt Avance. A few years later he opened TVManufacturing.
I have a TVMuzzleloading late lancaster that was made when Jack Garner still owned it and have mixed feelings about it. It's a beautiful gun and shoots like a dream. The problem I have with it is when you look inside. Only one of the lock screws goes through to the lock. The other is a dummy as it runs right through the ramrod channel. The wood under the lock is falling out, cut too thin during lock inletting and breaking off. The ramrod entry pipe is installed very badly. I bought this rifle when I didn't know any better and I'm glad I did because it shoots great but now that I'm almost done with my first kit gun I see all the things that were done sloppy on my TVM. I have a friend that has an older TVM fowler with the same kinda things wrong with his. All that said I have heard that since Matt took over he has cleaned up the product and quality is much better. If I were buying a gun today I would look at TVMuzzleloading for sure.

Thanks for correcting me Jon.  I wasn't sure which came first....as I said in my post I may have them backwards in chronology and as it turns out I did.....I'll make a mental note so I can keep them straight.....fat chance of that!!!!...hehehe.  Well now wait a minute......muzzleloading first, then manufacturing........maybe I can do that.  Anyway, thanks for correcting it.
