Which should I use?

I have two Ruger Blackhawks. One is a 10 mm/.38-40 convertible and the other is a .45 Colt/.45 ACP convertible. Here in Alabama you can legally use a handgun for deer. I would like to try to take a deer with one of them. Which gun/cartridge would be best? Also would it be better to use a hollow point for expansion or a solid for penetration? I don't reload.

I would use some warm 45lc. and around a 250 gr bullet in XTPs or a good SWC. I use 240 grain bullets in my 44 mag.

:cb2: The 10mm will work, but the 45 Colt will do it a lot better. Always use enough gun!

Win 73, use the one your the most comfortable and accurate with. And practice, practice, practice. Have fun and don't forget, takng a deer isn't the most important part of hunting with a handgun, enjoying the time outside in thw woods, with family or friends(if your so fortunate to have some to hunt with) is, at least to me. Good luck in the deer season.

Win73:  S.B. is soooo right.  Use what you are most comfortable with and practice, practice, practice.  That being said, I'm a 10mm/38-40 fan.  A 180 - 200 gn hardcast slug from that 38-40 should definately work for you on whitetail, but practice, practice and practice some more until you are confident in your abilities with that handgun.  JMO.  Mikey.
