Good Scope for New Encore 209 x .50?
« on: August 23, 2005, 08:27:44 AM »
OK, now that I have my new Encore .50, I need to put a scope on it.  I'm looking at scopes in the $300 and under range.  My initial thought was to get the Leupold VXI or VXII 3-9 x 40mm in matte black.  I've got Leupolds on my other rifles, but I'm not necessarily against trying other brands.  Does anyone out there have any recommendations?  Thanks!

I have a Leupold VXII 2X7X33 on mine. I love the combination.  :D

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 on mine and it works great. Nikon has redone the Buckmaster line for 2005 and they are supposed to be brighter than ever. They go for around $200.

I have a 3-9 Monarch on mine right now but I just picked up two of the new 2005 Buckmasters in 3-9 and they are great as well.  I don't know if I can tell the difference in 92% and 95% LT?  I have been real pleased with my Nikons over the past several years.  Can't go wrong with the Leupys either if you are partial to them.

I see that several of you have the 2-7 x 33mm Leupold scopes as opposed to the 3-9 x 40mm model.  Price is the same for both.  Other than the fact that the 2-7 x 33 is parallax adjusted to 75 yds, why go with the lower power and smaller lens?   Is the lower parallax adjustment really that important?  :?

To tell you the truth a straight 4 power would work just fine also. I just do use the 3X9X40 on my muzzleloaders, but if you want to, then do it. the 2X7X33 just works great for me. I like the lower power settings.

I know most readers wont agree with me on this but I am very happy with my red dot scope on my 209x50.I dont see much need for more than this cuz my shots are within 75 yds.I am not a target shooter though and only hunt deer with this gun.Within that range It is very effective.

I like the Leupold fixed 4X for mine.  It offers plenty of magnification and enough eye relief the you can mount the scope far enough forward that the hammer is easily accessible.

Mine wears a 2 1/2 Leo. I chose it because of the field of view and you can pick up your target faster. You still have a good point of aim on deer as fer as a BP gun will shoot. I have acouple of 3 x 9 Leos. laying in boxes here so I could easly put one on, but I like the 2 1/2x better for BP guns.

I have several Leupold scopes that are many years old and a newer one.  I have had ZERO failures or disappointments with the Leupold scopes.  In my opinion it just doesn't get any better than that for quality and durability.

I am sure some of the newer scopes also have good quality and may have good features such as good field of view, light gathering qualities, fogproof, etc. but I can't imagine them being any better than Leupold.
