Redfield three ring mount any good?
« on: August 26, 2005, 05:01:31 PM »
I recently purchased a used stainless encore in 7mm-08.  I found a Redfield three ring sight/base combo for around $60.  Do they absolutely have to be lapped to prevent damaging the scope?  How come they have to be lapped?  Is it because there are three rings?  I've never lapped rings before and never had any problems with any of my scopes.  The setup looks clean and really sturdy and I'd like to use it but I'm concerned about lapping.

upnorthbacon,

I have 4 sets of them on four of my Contender barrels.  I think they are great, but I have never tried any of the other multi-ring systems to use a comparison.  I have never lapped them.  I use a 1" wooden dowel rod to get them aligned.  As I am aligning them, I place the 'scope in the bottom portion of the rings from time to time.  I make sure it fits nicely and that the rings appear to be in line perfectly with the 'scope.  That is about the best I can expain it.  I will definately buy more as I get more T/C Contender barrels.  Good-luck...BCB

I've used them for years on my Contenders and have been satisfied with their performance.

I have  had a few, and really like them but i would definately lap them. Mine took a lot to get an even contact across all three rings. You can really see it when you start lapping. The one i have would have definately stressed the scope.

I just got one for my 7-08 Encore and really like it. I didn't lap it in but used a 1" steel bar to align everything. I will buy more I just wish they came in stainless.

One other quick comment…be certain the ‘scope you are going to mount with the 3-ring system will fit.  By this I mean that there is room between the front of the adjustment turret and the beginning of the bell on the front of the ‘scope.  I learned the hard way about that.  I had to mount a ‘scope using only the middle and rear ring.  I could not get the front ring on because the bell on the ‘scope hit right at the edge of the front ring.  Good-luck…BCB

Personally, I have never liked the Redfield 3-ring set.  It is a very heavy set up, and really doesn't provide any holding advantage over a decent 3-ring weaver job (which is much lighter and cheaper).
