just removed my cheap bushnell scope from my marlin 39a. thinking about trying a peep sight out on it instead. i've been looking at the lyman #66. is this a good one? does it have a small or larger size hole to see thru?

The Lyman is a good receiver mounted peep sight for the money. It comes with two apertures. Hunting aperture; 1/2 x .093 and a Target aperture; 5/8 x .040.

It isn't absolutely necessary, but you may want to consider changing out your front sight at the same time. I didn't and it leaves the Lyman a little high off the receiver. Not a big problem.

Have you considered a Tang mounted peep sight? Both Lyman and Marble's make one to fit the 39A.

I have a Lyman 66 on my 39A Mountie and really like it.  It actual has another aperature - just leave the insert out for a ghost ring.

I used the original rear sight to get approximate windage and elevation.  Then lots of experimenting trying to zero at 50 yards after setting zero at 25.  The secret here is that the bullet is still on its upward arc at 25 yards.  So before you lock the zero set, zero at 50 yards and then you will have adjustment to zero at 25 (or get close).  This is using the original blade on the ramp of a 1966 model.

I like it over a 4 power scope that I had used previously as it allows use of the rifle at handshake distances in low light for varmints.  It also makes target aquisition easier.  I have dropped 2 ground hogs at 35 yards without the work of lining up the front and rear sights.  Just put the bead on the target and squeeze the trigger.

A tang sight looks great too, but does require some adaptation for your trigger hand thumb.

Well......I just did the opposite.  I had a Marbles Tang Sight & Lyman 17A Front Globe Sight on my 1897CL (39A) and my poor eyesight finally forced me to replace them with a scope.  I put a Burris 4-12X32 on it.

I haven't listed them in the classified section yet, but if you're interrested in the Marbles Tang / Lyman Front sights, send me an email or PM.

I had a lyman 66 on my 39a that I use for SB Cowboy Rifle Silhouette. It wobbled around all the time unless I tightened the set screw down.  It got to be a pain so I got a Williams FP.  The elevation adjustment screw was too short on this sight so I called Williams and they sent me out a longer one at no charge.

I like it much better.  It does not wiggle near as much as the lyman and even though there is a set screw to contend with, it is much more ridged than the Lyman.

A few weeks ago I mounted the Lyman on a 357mag Rossi 92 that I was testing out.  After about 20 rounds it flew apart from recoil.  I called Lyman and they said that since it was over one year old they didn't have any interest in helping me out.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I have a Williams receiver sight on my 39A Golden Mountie.  I too got another aperture by just removing the insert.  The larger aperture makes target acquisition easier and quicker and does not reduce accuracy.

firstshot, great looking rifle. Did your sight set-up have any issues regarding range of adjustments? How does one determine height of the Lyman front sight?

I'm considering this set-up for my 1897CB.

Thanks for your help.
