Wishful Thinking?
« on: August 25, 2005, 07:01:14 PM »
Nothing like 45 minute cycle times.....

If we leave out cost and finding a 'smith that would do the work.  Would one of the old school African rimmed rounds like a 9.3x74R http://www.again.net/~steve/jpg/cd93x74r.jpg work in a Handi?

Link borrowed from riccardelli's pages.  Thanks

While it would work...if I were going to go with a 9.3 cartridge in a Handi...I would go for the 9.3x62mm...namely becasue the brass can be made from necked up 35Whelen brass and getting good new factory stamped brass isn't too bad...and... there are more factory loads for it...also... you have a larger velocity advantage over it...the 9.3 x62MM is close to my 338-06 in performance...A major dis-advantage on the 9.3x74R... is that very sloping cartridge with a 5deg shoulder...and your limited to 1 source of brass...RWS...[urlhttp://www.natchezss.com/category.cfm?contentID=productList&brand=RW&category=6&mfggroup=791&ammoMfg=&ammoSize=&ammoDram=&ammoFeature=&ammoRecID=&subgroup=5499&searchItem=&startRow=26&CFID=638943&CFTOKEN=25338346[/url]

...and even getting the good stuff isn't too bad with the 9.3x62mm per 100

Just my $.02

This was just an idea that popped in my head while being really bored at work.  I can spend tens of thousands of dollars of play money during long cycle times.

The Handi seems like a good platform for rimmed rounds.  If a guy could find someone to do the conversion it would be a unique rifle for sure.  You probably couldn't find two guys around here within 100 mi that have a 9.3 anything, let alone a 9.3x74R

The 9.3x62 question got kicked around pretty good a couple of weeks ago.  I phoned around.  It turns out to be less expensive to rebarrel my M1917 Enfield than rebore and rechamber a Handi to 9.3

I solved the problem by going over to the darkside and put a 338 WinMag on layaway.  The cost of converting a Handi to 9.3 x anything is prohibitive for a poor working stiff like myself.

However, the long cycle times happen two or three times a week for hours.

Zeke:

I thought about the 338 Win Mag for about a minute... :) ...that's why I went with the 338-06...it gets pretty close to it's big brothers velocities...but with a-lot less fuss and cost...oh...by the way...the cost is well within a working mans means of having this done...http://home.earthlink.net/%7Eoregunsmithing/id13.html...I already had the 25-06...and if you already have one...the cost is less than most B*** guns...and about the same if you have to buy a complete Ultra and send it out to him to redo...

So...if you want 338  Handi...it's doable...and a-lot of fun to shoot too... :D

Just the ones that it works on!!!!!  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D I figure that after spending more than double the cost of a Handi on it, I should be able to get more out of it than just something to shoot!!! The shock and awe factor has value, too.

Definatly " Shock & Awe "...having close to 338 Mag velocities with a 180 bullet...quite frankly gives me Shock & Awe " whenever I pull the trigger...knowing what it's going to do on the other end... 8)  :)  :-D
