Took my 30-06 Encore to the range today. Wow...this single shot business is fun. With the slimline muzzle brake the recoil was far less severe than my 44 mag. I wasn't really doing my part and still managed 1.5" groups

at 100 yds. I'm gonna have to keep playing with this beast so it'll be ready for black bear this Spring :grin: .

:shock: very nice, 1 1/2" ain't bad for first time out. what factory load? maybe someone will want to try it. awww boy!!!! shootin tc's is pure enjoyable. some just don't know what they're missin. :lol:

I remember the first time I shot my 308 Encore I was all grins... Then my buddy elbowed me out of the way and had his turn and he was the same way.. GOtta love them allthough it turns into an expensive habbit real quick...

I used 180 grain, Remington Express Core-Lokt PSP (Lot #R30065). I'm going back to the store Monday to buy a few more boxes. I hope to put the gun to good use chasing black bears around the mountains on the Kenai this Spring/Fall. I nothing else, it'll be a whole lot easier to pack through the alders. I can't believe I waited this long to get my first single-shot.

Try some 150gr Rem. PSP's they shot very good in my '06 pistol.I too am going to use the '06 for everything this year.The 150's are bar-none for black bears.If you hand-load try 58grs of IMR4350 and the 150gr NBT or 150gr Hornady SP interlock velocity is 2500fps.I have also tested some 150gr Win. Fail Safes with good groups.

No really, how bad is the recoil? Less than your .44 mag? It is very hard to believe.

Muzzle brakes are wonderful things for recoil, don't do much for your ears though.

I'm not joking. The 30-06 recoil is less than my 44 mag.
- TC Encore, 30-06, factory 180gr, muzzle brake, 15" bbl
- Ruger SBH, 44 mag, custom 320gr hard cast "bear bullets", no muzzle break, 5" bbl
I'm sure that the "hot" 44 mag loads with no muzzle brake have something to do with it. I was very surprised, however, at how tame the 30-06 shoots.

A friend of mine has a contender in 44 with a brake and I have an encore in -06 with a brake and my -06 recoils less than his 44, and way less than his 7x30 barrel with no brake.
