10” Siege Mortar for you Big Boys.
« on: August 22, 2005, 10:58:55 AM »
I received this email photograph from a manufacturer responding to my inquiry into the availability of a half scale Civil War Coehorn Mortar. He is holding a 1/2 scale in his hands.

Here are the stats from him on his 10-inch.

“The big mortar is a 10 inch civil war siege mortar, weight 6000 lbs with bed, I got 2 in stock, fires a 100lbs ball 4 miles with a 6 lbs pound of black powder”

Why purchase a new SUV or P/U Truck when you can own a complete working 10” Siege Mortar!!

Any takers for one of his 10” Siege Mortars?  Two are available.

Ed,

You didn't say what the guy wanted for it but we can put that aside for a minute. After all, it IS a great looking mortar so I'm sure it's worth every penny.

Let's see, to move it and haul it around you'd need:

A 6' x 12' heavy duty trailer for about $7800;
A 5 ton chain hoist for $500;
A home built frame to hold hoist (cost is negligible since it's homebuilt from scrap steel)

However, since a guy can always use a good trailer and chain hoist, we really don't have to take those costs into account.

All you really have to figure on is how much it will cost every time you fire it.

Eight 10" sand filled shells from Paulsons cost $1200
50 lbs of BP (good for 8 shots) is approximately $488 delivered

If I did the math right that works out to right about $211 per shot.

HEY, that's not bad. We can do this!!   :)  :wink:  :)

What's this "we" stuff, kemo sabe?

At that price I can't afford to even take a picture.

Your math has really summed it up as to why this Mortar is for the Big Boys.

You forgot to add that you will need a Hummer or diesel tractor to haul it around.

Now as for the price, how about around $4.1666 per pound.

When are you planning to order yours? We can have two delivered to Florida for the price of one.

You're right. Sorry about that. It was late. Go for the Hummer, it's cooler looking.  :grin:

Lets see...$4.1666 x 6000 lbs = $25,000!!  :eek:  :shock:  :eek: (actually, it's $24,999.60. I rounded it up)

Does that qualify as "too much of a good thing"?

Even if I could afford it, I'd have no place to shoot it. Somehow I get the impression too many people would be upset if I took it to the nearest beach and launched a few balls over the Juan De Fuca strait towards Canada.
