Just wanted to say thanks to all who have responded to my beginner's questions about my new Handi SB2 in .45-70.
With your help, I've finally got a rifle I'm confident with. I suppose I was a bit foolish to think I'd take it out of the box, load up a box of factory ammo, and shoot 1-inch groups.
... But, with advice from this site, such as thoroughly cleaning the new weapon, honing the locking surfaces, putting in a Williams receiver sight, and working up some hand loads, I've got the gun where I want it.
For whatever reason, the rifle's favorite load is a 300-gr. Remington JHP over 46.7 grains of Reloader-7. I got 2-inch groups at 100 yards with this (and I don't use any rest other than my elbows on the bench). Second best was 400 grain Remington JSPs over 47 grains of Accurate 2230.
My reloading gear has already paid for itself, and the Utah black bear had better watch out ... as soon as I can draw a tag.
Anyway, thanks again.
