Author Topic: Scoop on Rem. 597 .22 auto? (Read 705 times)

I'm in the market for a .22 auto. What are everyone's thoughts on Remington's 597? It's inexpensive but is it one of those "you get what you pay for deals?" Heck, at that price, I'd consider it a disposable rifle...LOL I think Remington advertises the base model for $157, with a stainless at around $250. The Ruger seems to have a larger following but it's around $350 - $450. At that price, I would probably go to a lever in Win., Marlin or Browning.

I've got a 597 LS in 17 HMR/22 Mag. It's been flawless since day one. It's accurate to boot. There's a lot of 597 bashing on the net, mostly from people that don't own them. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I use a 10/22 for my 22 LR needs. It's a good enough rifle, but the fit/finish aren't as good as the 597. YMMV MI VHNTR

My sister's ex boyfriend has a 597 in 22LR, and I've fired it a few times, and been there every time he's fired it. Its not a bad little 22. Pretty accurate, feels nice, maybe he got lucky but the trigger pull is pretty nice too. The only bad thing is that it does stovepipe now and then.
I'm a 10/22 man myself though and at that price, for a few bucks more you could get a 10/22.

I've had 3 of the low-end plastic stocked guns. I no longer own any of them. I've known guys that have had good success with the laminated stocked/bull barrel variations, but then you are also talking about a lot more money. For a good basic semi-auto, I would look at a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22. They've been around for decades. Remington comes out with a completely redesigned .22 semi auto every decade. That should say something right there. . .

I've got one. Had it for 7 or 8 years now and have never had a problem. If you keep it clean you will not have any trouble. And the thing is the most accurate simi-auto .22lr i've ever seen. I have no trouble winning the shooting matches around here with it. :grin:

I bought one from walmart and it lasted about 1000 rounds before the mainspring wore out to the point it would jam every other shot,no amount of cleaning would help it,I returnde it and got a refund.
