Ideas for a bear skin...
« on: September 14, 2005, 02:50:23 PM »
Several years ago, I handgunned a nice black bear in the Pine Tree State. I have had the skin tanned and it has been in a storage box for a few years.

I am in the process of reorganizing my place and I want to something with it. I need some ideas. I have two bear heads on the wall right now so a third isn't needed( unless I shoot a really big one this fall in the Granite State) .I just don't want it to stay in the box forever.

Would a fur hat be appropriate? A rug? Any other ideas? Thank you.

Well,im not sure if you hunt with a muzzle loader but if you did you could make several "possible" bags out of the hide to hold patch, balls etc..like a traditionalist.

If your able to work it into a mount, a 3/4 isn't a bad mount to have, especially if the right person does it...

Only get a bear rug if you don't have a house dog or have one that will learn pretty fast not to do his business on it.

How about a nice long coat.  I saw a guy a few years back in the grocery store wearing a beatiful black bear coat, and have been impressed with that usage of the hide ever since.  Truely impressive!

XForce, won't be long untilw e get to put it on the floor here, only worry once the house dog passes is the cat, not sure who is going to go first, as the cat is about 10 and the dog not much younger.

My border collie/Australian sheperd half-breed no good cow-dog chow hound LOVES to roll around and sleep on the bear skin rug we have, but the cats will avoid it at ALL costs. They don't like the 'yote skins either. Been thinkin about making rugs out the cats, too, but the wife won't let me...Peace and God bless, Wolfsong

My neighbor has six Black Bear hides that he decided not to have made into flat mounts (Rugs).  He just had them tanned and hangs them by their noses from Caribou racks around his den.  When his grandkids come up to visit he uses them to cover the kids when they fall asleep in the den.  Or, for when the little ones come, for them to play on.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Guy in my home town made a good rug with his, and he has a gun collection room that it stays in, that way it doesn't get messed up, and fits in a good place.  I would recommend just looking around your house, on the walls, the floor, the ceiling, and see where somthing might fit in well.

I once saw one used as a bedspread.
