Having really enjoyed the Buffalo Classic, I am just noting that it has really come into its own after firelapping. It shot fine before, but seemed to catch a bit more powder than I am used to. I also shoot a Marlin 1895, and a Ruger #1, so the cartridge is very familiar. I got this gun to shoot longer distances with a peep sight. I was able to induce leading before the lapping at about 1600fps with the 330gr. Gould bullet. This smallish bullet would slide and smear and leave some rather outlandish chunks of lead in the beginnings of the barrel. After lapping, I am able to drive the bullet with fair accuracy (3.5 in. at 100 yards) to 1800fps. This can be shot about 10 times before I get lead build-up that is sufficient to ruin accuracy for follow up shots. I normally shoot only gas checked bullets at that speed, but it has been interesting to "try out" the longer barrel and note the velocity differences. Once lapped, the barrels of the 22 and 32 in. barrels are not much different at all. Perhaps a difference of 20fps on average with the faster powders, (H4198, XMP-5744, and 2400.)
My accuracy load so far is the lyman 400gr. 457643, Starline brass, WLR primers, and 25gr. of 2400. This puts me into around a 1.5 in. to 2 inch group at 100 yards. I have yet to try this load after lapping. I am curious to try out a scope with this gun, and find out its true accuracy. My other 45-70's can beat it, but they are scoped.
Thanks for all the helpful information. I'm trying my best not to get hooked on these. I already have a closet full of Marlins... :? The 500 S&W does look tempting. The one at my store hasn't even sold yet.
