Barnes X bullets in 416
« on: August 26, 2005, 08:15:24 AM »
I got a reply from Barnes telling me that they don't make a 300 gr tsx bullet,  but said that they would place my request on the future  desire list.

In the mean time I bought a box of the 300 gr X bullets.  After looking the situation over  I think that I can chuck up my collet attachment on the lathe and cut a couple of shallow narrow grooves like those that are on the 350 gr TSX bullets.  Probably will only do 5 bullets since they are priced dearly if my idea doesn't work.   Looks to me like this might be what is done on the 350 gr bullets.    Any ideas or suggestions.......  Don

longgun, I shoot the 300 gr. Barns X bullets in my 416 Rigby. I have great success with accuracy. What are your goals to achieve in the grooving of the bullet? Is it a pressure reduction you are looking for or better accuracy?

Redhawk,  I was trying to reduce the copper fouling mostly.   IN addition there might be a little more accuracy to be gained.  This is speculation since I have not shot any yet.   However the Hornady 400 gr fills my bore with copper in just a few shots.    Main object in using 300 gr bullets is to reduce the recoil for fun shooting.   Will use heavier bullets for hunts....Don

I am going on a Water Buffalo hunt on August 30 and I am using the 300 Gr. Barnes X bullets. I spoke with the guide and he said it would do the job. If a 300 gr. 375 H&H works, the 416 with a 300 gr. is even better. I will have some of the banded solid 350 gr. Barnes bullets also.

I do not get much in the way of copper fouling in my barrel from the barnes bullets, and when I do it comes out easy with the CR10 from Barnes.  :D

I picked up a box of Barnes 325 grain X-bullets in .416 caliber at a local chain store.  They only had one box so I called some other sporting goods stores in the area and nobody had any.  I then called Barnes and a young lady informed me that they had quit making the 325 weight but still made 300 and 350 grain .416 X-bullets.  To date, I have not tried these 325 grain X-bullets.  I'm having all of the fun that I can stand with 350 grain Speer Mag-Tips and a mild charge of IMR-4895.

I like the Reloader22 for my 416 Rigby.  :D

I don't get much copper fouling from the 300 gr. Barnes X. Nothing the CR-10 can't take care of.  :D

Also, the 300 gr. Barnes X worked great on the Water Buffalo. One shot kill and bull only went 20 to 30 yards before hitting the ground.  :-D

I'll try the barnes 300gr bullets in the TSX but not in the X. I had a bad expirence with the X bullets and I'll never use them again. They put to much copper in my barrel. :D
