New to GBO, have a question about bull barrels.
« on: September 04, 2005, 01:37:31 PM »
I read a lot about "bull" barrels and have yet to read a definition of what is referred to as a "bull" barrel. Can anyone help me understand what this is?

I recently acquired my first Contender and after many years of hunting deer with a TC Hawkin, I thought it would be great to hang one on the wall with a 44 mag.

My Contender came new with the .17 HRM and I love it.  Punched a lot of paper and bagged one groundhog so far.  I purchased a used 10" TC 44 mag barrel for my G2, but found that the original forend will not work.  The action works fine with no slop, but I'm not sure what forend I need.  Nothing on websites so far have helped me narrow the choice.  Can anyone shed any light on this subject.

I became aware of GBO while searching for info on my Contender and became hooked after the first visit.  I've told all my friends and we all sit and talk of the latest we have read.  I am amused by stories of Bigfoot and other unexplained events and absolutely roared over the stories in the humorous category.  I find the information exchange concerning guns and hunting very informative and have gained a lot of insight already.  I wish I had discovered GBO a long time ago.

Redspud,
welcome !!!   Glad to see an other Buckeye  On graybeards!

The (bull) Barrel  Is bigger in Dia.  than a standard Barrel....   Or a barrel with no tapper....     As for your forend ,  You Can go to Fox ridge outfitters ..  They should have what you need if its a Bull barrel...
Hope this helps

A bull barrel (straight) has extra steel over a tapered barrel that will really help in taming the recoil on a 44 magnum. You'll hear a lot of folks complain about the recoil in a 44 mag so you'll be glad you have all the weight.

I know it's a personal thing but I don't really like scopes on handguns. TCs are an exception. I don't find I can shoot an iron sighted Contender all that much better than a good quality revolver. To wring out all of the accuracy from my TC I scope it. Of course all of the silhouette shots out there are just laughing about how bad a shot I must be  :-D  Where I'm going with this is adding a base, rings and scope (red dot or traditional) contributes even more weight that will tame the recoil for you.

I do believe your original question was answered correctly by the previous post. You will be needing a new forend.

I appreciate the info that has been passed along.  I'm on a quest now to learn as much as I can about my new hobby.  I've been hunting and shooting for years, but only recently acquired my long awaited G2 Contender.  I kept putting it off due to the price but Mrs. Redspud decided the time was right.  Any information that I can come across is appreciated.

Thanks again to EdK and sk330lc, I truly appreciate the info.
