Handgun Ram Hunt in Mason, TX
« on: August 02, 2005, 04:47:53 PM »
I was asked to compose an article about the new Springfield "Professional FBI" model 1911 in .45 ACP pertaining to practical application in the field and not just file another technical evaluation or "street" usage article. So I decided to do a hunting piece from the stand point of how would the gun work as a sidearm for a hunting guide, rancher, cowboy, etc. in the field.

Date - July 30-31, 2005
Place - Southwest of Mason, TX
Temp - up to 99, clear starting out changing to overcast with heavy thundershowers in the afternoon
Gun - Springfield "Professional FBI" model 1911 in .45 ACP
Ammo - Corbon 230 gr. hollow points
Range - 35-40 yards
Shot placement - straight on as the ram was coming toward me and looking right at us

For those of you who notice such things, yes, that is a very light colored shirt. My first set of clothes had gotten soaked one of the rain storms that produced some very vivid entertainment for us while we were on the top of one of the hills trying to hide under a low rock outcropping. After all mud on the face and sticks in the hair doesn't make for good photos, and the first thing on top in my bag when we got back to the truck to change was this shirt.

Enjoy.

nice ram Denny.   What ranch were you hunting on?  Now, when you need help testing all that ammo, just let me know... :-)

It was a head on shot and entered just to the left of the sternum, penetrated thru the heart, left lung and ended up in the stomach. I would guestimate it went between 16 and 19 inches.

This was a private ranch that a friend owns. It is next to an exotic ranch called Bluff Creek Ranch which I believe is run by the Wildlife Ranch out of Mason.

Nice ram!!!

I've always had a hanker'n to try out a 1911 on game.  I wonder how it'd work on boars.  I never had the guts to try it on a ram, maybe I'm just chicken.

:) Back in the early sixties I hunted with an old gentleman on his farm about 35-40 miles south of Macon, Ga.  On our first hunt he asked  "whatch ya carrying?"  I told him it was a Ruger .44 mag.  He told me, "You might as well leave it in the truck, sometimes I have to shoot 'em two-three times to kill 'em with this one."  I looked over at his holster, an old military .45 Auto grip was sticking out.  I don't know what type of ammo he was using but from what he said, it wasn't too effective.
