Barrel question?
« on: September 13, 2005, 06:08:16 PM »
I have a new Contender frame, although not a G2.  If I buy a barrel that was before the step lug ( type 4 or earlier), how much of a problem will I have opening and closing the action and how do i fix the problem?

In my experience, this is not likely to pose a problem, i.e. flat bottom barrel lug usually works on everything.  The stepped bottom ones often give problems on very early frames.  If you do experience a problem, you can usually fix it by lightly stoning the locking lugs or replacing them.

Depending on the age of the barrel and frame, you may be able to close the barrel but not to open it again.  If the barrel has the old one-piece bolt, don't even try to fit the barrel to the frame.  Replace the bolt and spring with the newer two-piece bolt.  Then you should be good to go.  I have had two older barrels which needed the bolt to be stoned in order to fully engauge the interlock safety; plan on removing 0.002" or more if the firing pin doesn't hit the primer.
