well brothers and sisters, it is time for the myronman to get another dog. i have been combing the tri state area for the next holley family member. very little luck so far.

my favorite all time breed is a german shorthair. so far only one breeder in three states meets my criteria. she has one young pup available, $800; and one year old started dog that has been trained to level one obeidence, started on his training, and is a housedog that is housebroken and is good with small children, $1600. these are the only prospects for gsp's in the area i can find.

i also have two vizsla breeders i am looking at. the major problem i have is no experience with the breed. from what i am told, not much different from gsp's, except a tad smaller and maybe more energetic. i would love to know what those with expereince on this think.

also considering a brittany spaniel. i like the size and that they are pointers. i dont like their coat. i am unfamilar with their temperment, but understand they are supposed to be good with children.

i would also consider the right english setter or pointer. but there aint a whole lot of those around here, and surely not many up to my standards.

so i am wanting opinions on the vizsla breed from those with experience with them. enlighten me please.....

Just my opinion but I think the brittanies in this country have been bred to much for the show circuit just like the cockers and Irish spaniels have been. My expirience with them has been limited but the few I did see I was not that impressed. Not saying there are not some good brittanies out there I am sure there are but if I bought one its parents on both sides would have to be field trial champions with a long line behind them. Too darn easy these days to get stuck trying to get a good dog but then I am sure you know that already. Most of my expirience has been with retrievers. Labs and Chessies and one American Water Spaniel. Good luck with your search let us know what you get.

The folks at Lone Oak Shooting Preserve have vislas. They should be open now. Their # is 608-297-7104 or email at loneoak@dotnet.com . I see a lot of shorthairs at various NAVHDA events, many are outstanding dogs, NAVHDA has several chapters in WI. I think their site is NAVHDA.org , but not sure. I have German Wirehaired Pointers and am happy with them. I had 3 American water Spaniels years ago.

I like American Browns and would have one now if they were a bit lighter. The dang place where I live said we can have a dog but only 30 pounds and under that is a cocker for a bird dog or a beagle for a hound if your into hunting dogs as the American Brown can go to 40 pounds. I wish I could have found one that would have stayed smaller as I like my cocker and he retrieves but does not want to pick up birds. I am trying to get him past this but it is not easy. He does not mind feathers and will retrieve a dummy with feathers on it or a grouse tail I just cannot get him to pick up a dead bird. I got him a couple of years ago to pick up a small duck but then he quit again. Just have to keep working with him I guess.

well, ended up with an english setter male.

took him out today and put him on some live bobwhites, he did very well. solid points and didnt flinch when i fired blanks on the second and third birds.

i am very happy with him.

Now to be fair labs are great dogs as are chessies but it all depends on what you want to use them for. It sounds like you got what you wanted so that is great congrats on the new pup. Only problem I see with black labs is the hip problems and getting a dog that has good bloodlines due to the puppy mills there were for years but then that applies to the other breeds too :cry:
