« on: August 26, 2004, 04:13:28 PM »
OK boys and girls, here's the game where YOU, the members will have a chance to "NAME THAT HUNTABLE ANIMAL". The rules are simple:
1) Common Name
2) Place of Origin
3) Scientific name
4) any additional information
5) Winner is next to place a image-If split either can do it.
Scores will be based on the amount of correct information given. If one member gives part of the information and another members gives more information on the subject, the points may be split. Winners will receive nothing, except to prove to the other members who is the most knowledgable about these sort of things. We will start with a easy one for ya. :D

Wow, I know what that is,  it is a:
1) sharp horned speed beef
2) Earth, third rock from the sun
3) Largus mammilius specius
4)  This tasty morsel is found in arid climes, contains enough meat to feed my family for six month's.  It is a Bit** to drag out of the woods but is incredibly tasty.

BTW, I do not mean to make fun of this competition, but my ignorance of having no idea what the heck that thing is or even where it comes from made me feel inferior and therefore needed to joke about it.

good luck with the competition guys, this is out of my league.

I am not up to speed on some of these animals either.  How about giving us multiple guess/choice? :)   Isn't it something like a Nyla alias devil?  Seems like I heard of something like that up here in Yooper land.

1) Nilgai
2) Pakistan, India, and Nepal
3) Boselaphus tragocamelus
4) The South Texas exotic population is thought to be possibly larger than the indegenous population in Asia. The Asian population is now considered to be conservation-dependent (meaning without quality management it could readily become threatened). Runs at speed of up to 30 mph and males may weigh upwards of 600 lbs. One of last two present-day species descended directly from the ancestors of all modern-day bovidae (cows and their relatives).

Hmmm....huntable animal, eh? I don't have any pics to post that wouldn't be obvious. But how about a sort of trivia question instead?

How about the common name, scientific name, and general range of all the native predatory cats found in the United States? Winner gets to continue as above. Hint: there are six, and three of them are NOT huntable.

Right on, WW hunter! You're it again! Just as a side note, there is one other cat species that has been extirpated from the southern US - the margay cat Leopardus wiedii that ranges now from northern Mexico down to N. Argentina.

Buffalo family, Yak isn't it?  They eat whatever they can find under the snow.  Are not very aggressive. and tend to mill around when something is wrong rather then run, correct?

Smart?  No way.  Since I was about 10 years old, though, I started reading about some of the better known worldwide hunters: Gates, McElroy, O'Connor, Abruzzi, etc...  The different kinds of Markhor have always been of interest to me.  As of now, they are listed as a CITES I (I think) animal and illegal for importation to the U.S.A. in any form.  Several groups are trying to have it listed lower in the CITES categories so that sporthunting by foreignors is acceptable.  The problem lies in that they inhabit the portion of Pakistan that is being (and has been) fought over between Pakistan and India for quite some time.  Like the Giant Sable of Angola, many feared the war and poaching may drive the Markhor to extinction.  That hasn't been the case (for either the Markhor or the Giant Angolan Sable) and good numbers are being reported since the fighting has ceased.  Unfortunately, Pakistan or India (or both) put up a fence between the two countries and some feel the Markhor may be suffering by its habitat being severed.  I have no idea and am only reporting what little bit of info I can find.

Hunts for the Markhor are likely to be well above what I would ever be able to afford, even if the animal is approved for hunting.

As far as the mouse deer, I forget where I'd seen a picture of one of those before, but thought it was here someone had posted a question about it.

I do fully intend to do some hunts in mid-Asia at some point.  After this trip to Zim is over and paid for, I think my next out-of-Alaska hunt will be for Marco Polo Sheep and Mid-Asian Ibex.
