I FOUND A HOG TUSK AND WOULD LIKE TO CLEAN IT UP
« on: August 14, 2005, 04:19:50 PM »
I found a hog Tusk in the top of the ground in one of our food plots, several other bones were found also. It is impressive to me and I would like to clean it up some, any reccomendations would be appreciated.

I think you can use Clorox to clean your tusk with, I don't think i would leave it in the Clorox for a long time with out checking it regularly. Hope this helps.........Joe..........

I'd think that if it's too dry, soaking it in anything might make it fall apart.

What's wrong with a little soap and water?  I mean, how grimey is the thing?

If there's some rough spots a little  Bon-Ami or a similar cleanser should get it right off.

Shoot man, I dunno.

I soak the skulls including the teeth in a solution of 1 to 3 Clorox & water for 48 hrs. Works great! I then saturate all the bone (and teeth) in a sealer called Seal Crete. Will last outside indefinitely. I line em up on the fence posts around the yard.

Fred,

Your neighbors would not like it.  Don't get any ideas.  Hmmm...I think the wife would nix it first. :)

Just on the corners, Dave.

Maybe backlight 'em with some torches for "mood".

I think it'd give the neighborhood kids just the impression I'm lookin' for...

Well..... My place is close to a prison. The guards tell me that the escapees always run back from my direction to the gate, begging to get back in. The dog handler complains that his Bloodhounds never have any fun when the "game" runs my direction.

8) Throw it in your tumbler with some crushed walnut shell for a couple of days.  That should clean and polish it to satin finish.  I make jewelry, and often polish deer/elk horns this way for use in my work.

If it is a solid piece, it will be OK to throw in a few empty cases at the same time.  They will just help in the polish..........

Clean it up with soapy water and let dry, brush on several coates of Elmers glue and it will seal it and make it look shiny. I have a hog skull done up that way and it looks good.  :D

You can also whiten them up a bit and give them a good cleaning by boiling them in a one part water / 2 parts hydrogen peroxide solution with a couple teaspoons of "409" cleaner poured in. Slowly boil them for 15 minutes, let the water cool, then boil them again in fresh water for 15 minutes. You can polish the tusks by sanding lightly with 400 grit wet / dry sandpaper, and them buffing them by hand with any kind of white metal polishing paste. I use this method on turkey wing bones to make calls. I have found that using bleach can sometimes make them brittle.
