Would this be safe ?
« on: September 05, 2005, 03:57:16 PM »
I have some surplus 7.62X54R ammo that has 147 gr bullets in them.  Could I pull these and put in M25 tracer bullets in their place using the existing powder?  The M25's are  for 30-06.   They are 146.5 grs.

These are both .308 so logically it shouldn't be a problem but am I overlooking something?

I can buy the 7.62X54 tracer for $1.00 a round but that seems a little high when I could just use these bullets and I already have them.

thanx in advance for any help.  I know disclaimers apply but would like some input.

Steve

If you don't seat them any deeper it will be just fine.  You may have a problem loading the .308 bullets in cases you have pulled the surplus stuff from, the 7.62X54R is really at least .311, so the new bullets may fall into the case.  If you have a Lee factory crimper you may be able to squish the case mouth a little to hold the bullet while you crimp it with the crimping die.  The .308 bullets will shoot fine, they may just be a little less accurate, but then if you are shooting tracers I bet you won't care.  Larry
