96 loads and chamber
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:56:41 PM »
this ? has been asked before i am sure. Is the chamber on my 40 cal. 96 fully supported?
i have been hand loading and switched from tite group to long shot powder.  I see that the pressure with long shot is less.
my loads are 11 grains long shot with 135gr. noslers, and 7 1/2 gr. long shot with 165 golden sabers. there hot but not that hot.
my target load was 5.7 of tite group and the 135 gr.  very mild. B T W  i love the golden sabers.

so the ?? is about the chamber and do you think my loads are O K?
 thanks guys

Not familiar with those powders or loads, but are you seeing signs of excess presssure?....flattened primers?  Buldged case at the base.

I have a 96 Elite, and I would say that the case is not fully supported, but better supported than in a Glock.    I use 4 grains fo Bullseye with a 180 grain lead bullet.  This gets me above the required power factor for IDPA.   No problems with excess pressure of buldging case with that load.

long shot from my data shows a very low pressure curve and good vel.  8 grains of long shot powder should yield 1150  Vel. with  pressure at 32,300 with the 180 grain bullet.  7.5 with the 165's should also be at about 1150. with a little less pressure.
my O.A.L.  is 1.127. they feed and shoot well. I was told to stay under the max pressure of 35,000, and I do.
the primers are a little flat, but i expect that and there is no bulge in the case.  so i guess i answered my own ?? there.
with a shell in the barrel it is captured all around except for a little spot on the feed ramp.  but it does not go past the webbing of the case. so i guess that means it is not fully supported.   to be fully supported it would have to have a separate feed ramp. i think.
i understand that other things effect pressure, such as O.A.L( seating to deep ) but i don't know what Else would.
  maybe to tight a crimp?

thank you for your help
