Upcoming 500 S&W range report
« on: September 07, 2005, 03:02:32 PM »
Tomorrow krochus and I will be taking my 500 S&W handi to the range. We'll be chronographing my handload of 42 grains of H110 with a 385 grain remington spitzer core-lokt. Hopefully we'll be putting the 500 vs. .45-70 debate to rest one way or the other. That or we'll be giving you more ammo. I think it'll be on par with the .45-70 even though that  may offend some people for some reason.

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Well, 1889fps is on par for some of the 400gr 45-70 loads, there aren't any using a 385gr for a direct comparison, so that will have ta be as close as it gets. The 400gr 45-70 loads in levergun level still tops the 500 S&W, but not enough to be of notice to any critter that gets whacked with either one of em up close, but the .500's poorer BC is gonna cause it to loose velocity quicker than the 45-70 load, so range and trajectory will be more limited with the 500... but for it's intended use, it should work great!  The Hodgdon shows the 45-70 400gr ranging from 1845 to 2002fps with the Speer JFP, then going into the modern rifle data from 1883 up to 2108fps.
