I have a BSA SuperSport .177. I have never hunted with it, just pest control around the house. What would be a good pellet for squirrel hunting and what is the effective range on squirrel sized game?

For up to 20 yds wad cutters.
For up to 30 yds hollow points.
For up to 50 yds dommed.

You will need to test fire several different pellets on paper targets located at the different intended hunting ranges to find out which ones groups the best and select those for hunting. A Straight Shooters pellet sampler is a good idea for testing an array of different pellets.
With a 14 fpe airgun as the SuperSport .177 the maximum effective range for squirrels maybe up to 50 yds, but the real limiting factor will be your shooting skill.

I really like the RWS pointed pellets. I think they're called SuperPoint. They cut like a wadcutter, but penetrate better. They have been remarkably effective in my 750fps rifle.

mjfa are you saying I can't shoot? :lol: Simply ask a question and get harassed! :lol: J.K. Thanks for the help! I normally use the BSA for backyard pests and shooting targets to stay sharp and have always shot Premiers. Thought this would be a good time to try her out in the woods.

First go to http://home.hiwaay.net/~ispellan/PelletTest02.html and look at the Terminal Pellet Test that was done. Personally I, and my family, use nothing but Beeman Crow Magnum hollow points for all of our small game hunting. Everything from Tree Squirrels to Merriam Turkeys. The favorite number 1 small game animal are Brush Bunnys. About the size of eastern Cottontails. 95% of the time or more you are not going to get head shots due to their particular habit of never holding their heads still. Body shots are the norm. Also you must anchor them where they are or loose a great number of them because they crawl off down a hole or make it into the large brush piles of agriculture pruning they prefer to live in. The farmers take offense to you tearing apart their pruning piles just to get a bunny. Seeing that squirrels can/are just as tough I would suggest you get a pellet that does lots of terminal damage to anchor them on the spot. While the Crow Magnum might loose a small bit of accuracy to domed pellets the terminal damage they do far over rides any accuracy loss. Lawdog

Sorry ajshoots, I didn't mean you can't shot. What I should wrote is that the shooter's (any shooter, myself included) skill is the limiting factor that sets the range, within gun's capability, for a clean humane kill.
