Dragon powder ?
« on: August 24, 2005, 12:53:29 AM »
I was recently gifted a pound of Dragon FFF and while it's not a totally unfamaliar name, I know nothing about it.  I don't remember any discussions about it.  Anyone know where it fits in the scheme of things?

A friend was just gifted several pounds. It broke his cannon tail stock.

There was some info on the internet regarding the stuff but I don't remember all the details so I'll just say the reports were not complimentary.

A close examination of the stuff my friend had showed a lot of real fine powder mixed in with what was 3f. My impression was that the powder was graded through a 3f screen and everything that passed the screen was put in canisters and sold as 3f. The result is that dust and all the fines went in the can.

It looks like a semi-graded pyrotechnic powder to me. It is/was made in China. I think if a person had a large quantity it could be "bottom screened" and probably would be OK.

I remember a few years back,,(somtimes),,the madmonk told about dragon,, and Will just said it ,,it is/was a pyrotechnic powder (for fireworks). Some guys thought they'd get rich and brought over several caro containers of the stuff. It never worked really well for consistant shooting in bp arms. The stuff works well in "Candy Cannon" though,  and makes good "Boom" sounds
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

Almost sounds like someone may have been cleaning out their magazine and found a way to get rid of a can!!  :)

Thanks for the input.

If anyone wants to screen that Dragon powder to make it more effective, here is what you need...

According to "Complete Guide To Handloading", Third Edition, by Philip B. Sharpe:
Fg  10 to 14 mesh
FFg  16 to 24 mesh
FFFg  24 to 46 mesh

American Standard Sieve Sizes: Screen openings (mesh) in inches and microns:
10 to 14 mesh  0.0787" to 0.0555"  2000 microns to 1400 microns
16 to 25 mesh  0.0469" to 0.0278"  1180 microns to 710 microns
25 to 45 mesh  0.0278" to 0.0139"  710 microns to 355 microns

Mean diameter of range:
Fg    0.0671"  1700 microns
FFg  0.0374"  945 microns
FFg  0.0209"  533 microns

In effect, FFg is half the size of Fg and FFFg is half the size of FFg.

Because they were basically repackaging this imported pyro powder, the Feds shut them down and Dragon is no longer available.   Last I read, anyways.
