Why no SKS parts kits?
« on: October 17, 2005, 04:24:00 PM »
I need some SKS parts and I have looked but can't find any parts kit. Individual parts, yes, but I would like a good kit.
You can find tons of AK parts kits but non for the SKS.
I guess I would be better served just buying a shooter grade and rob the parts from it.
I noticed that Aim and Southern Ohio Guns has them for around $80.

SKS parts kits

The reason for the lack of SKS parts kits is simple:  economics!

AK/AKM parts kits are widely available (as are other "assault rifles") because the original guns are banned from importation.  The parts kits with removed/destroyed receiver are not.  The parts are always worth SOME salvage value.

SKS rifles, on the other hand, have always been legal to import as a legal semi-auto rifle, and are worth more complete than disassembled into parts.

Surely there are lots of SKS parts available.  Check the Shotgun News, The Gun List,  or some such publication.

We don't see that much in sks parts because when the sanctions we put on china went into effect we halted the import of the chinese sks this caused the parts to be turned into shootable sks's. These guns can be indentified by the etched numbers/identification these were assembled from parts bins. If we ever did have or see any parts kits for sks's so they went being made into complete guns.
Some parts are hard to find for sks's now too. But its places like Numrich Gun Parts, Tapco, Sarco or Aim Surplus for sks parts.  I do find some harder to get sks parts at Tapco.  Numrich just added a Yugo sks parts section to their sks's too.
Some of these "shooter grade" yugo sks's are showing up for $80 have a lot of rust lately too there has been compliants/reports on other forums about it. I mean rusted to the point its not even a functional shooter. I'm not sure if they are even a good parts gun if your looking for gas system parts. I guess were hitting the bottom of the barrel on the yugo sks's too. I kind of surprised they are selling these sks's in a rusted condition without saying it. Thats not right and it sure is going to make me watch what i buy and who I buy from now on too. When a dealer advertises a gun as a shooter it should be shootable right? It can sure hurt their business reputation really quick.

I'm not a political person, but I should have figured it to be the reason. And I too can see that they are worth more complete than disassembled.
Hate to hear that about the rusted out SKS's. I'll have to inspect it myself then before I buy-of course as one should always do.
Any bad reports from the 2 I mentioned-Aim and SOG? I have done some bisness with Aim in the past and have had absolutely no problems and they were great to deal with.
