New Guy - dumb question

Ok- take it easy on the new guy. Just bought a new .308 and didn't  give it as thorough a cleaning as I should and sure enough - stuck case.

I have read through the "stickys" on cleamning and hand lapping".

Ok - here it is--   What is hand lapping?

Welcome NDFAN  :D

As I may not be the best to try to explain it, I will let other more experienced posters reply...

Welcome aboard! I haven't had any trouble with my Handi's with a stuck case but one, my 243. Just cleaned it really well to make sure the chamber was oil free, had no more problems since. Others in the know will explain the hand lapping better than I. Be prepared to spend more as you get the dreaded (not really) handiholic disese.... :D

I used Flitz on a patch wrapped around a shotgun brush chucked in a drill to polish the chamber. Ran it for about 2 minutes, trying to stay out of the throat I also stroked the bore about 100 passes with Flitz on a patch, changing the patch every 15-20 strokes.

I think it is more important that the chamber be completely free of any cleaner or oil. I just use dry patches in the chamber area after cleaning.

The 22-250 hasn't stuck a case on me yet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have polished the chamber with Flitz using a shotgun bore mop and a patch wrapped around it.

I am going to the range on Sunday. I'll let you know what happens.

I was at the range with my muzzleloaders, when my .308 handi balked like this... needless to say I was pissed and frustrated. I took my short bullet starter, put the .50 cal bore brush, and gave it about 50 shots in the breech end... barrel in one hand brush in the other. Result = shells fly about 25' over my shoulder

Thanks! I polished the chamber with Flitz. Took it to the range yesterday. No stuck cases.

Iwould assume that polishing the chamber with Flitz should becomea partt of the regular cleaning routine?

Polishing the chamber only needs to be done once when new, just normal cleaning after that and making sure the chamber is clean and dry before shooting.

I`ve been shooting for over 50 years and have yet to experience a "stuck-case".   Been reading about some of the guys having that problem.  Anybody venture a guess as to why?  In general terms.

It's a fact of life for ejector equipped NEF/H&R rifles, the chambers are a bit rough from the factory and the weak spring and ejector finish leave a lot to be desired. NEF/H&R is switching over to mechanical extractors to eliminate the problem, all the new calibers have extractors, as soon as they run out of the ejector underlugs, they'll all have em.

Tim does it help to put in a stronger spring? I have a 223 Handi. Thanks - Gordy.

I think it was Fred that suggested putting a smaller spring inside the existing spring to eliminate the issue, but I've not had a problem on any rifle shooting normal to warm loads or hot loads in the 45-70, as long as the chamber has been polished and kept clean.

I've had 1 and only one 45-70 stick on my ejector mod'd to extractor rifle.    One my cousin's 223 and 30-06, he's had a ton stick for him.  ...even after a chamber polish.

Just something about when the ejector moves outward, it drops down a bit and slips over the rim of the rimless rounds sometimes. (reason #2 why I dont own rimless Handi's)
