Looking for opinions on the scout scope mount for SKS
« on: September 08, 2005, 04:33:24 PM »
After finding out my B-square mount wont work with my new Dragonov stock I looked at what was on the market and it seems the two best mounts are the Choate drill and tap or the scout scope mounts. The scout mount would be cheaper and easier but it looks like you would lose a lot of FOV. I plan on using a red dot scope. Anybody out there have field experience with the scout scope mount.

Tosco Red Dot

I have a Tosco Red Dot on an SKS and I feel it helps improve accuracy.  It also has a great field of view (but so would a 1.5x or 2x scope).  One piece of advice, buy extra batteries and keep them with the ammo you take to the field or range.  A Red Dot with dead batteries is about as pathetic as you can get, it is easy to forget to turn the darn thing off after you use it.

However, I really like the DC scope mount that I have, which is a tight rear cover scope mount.  This SKS also has a Choate camo plastic stock and a few other things.

You might want to read the following review on various kinds of scope mounts.

http://www.simonov.net/mounts.htm

It discusses you B-square and just about every other kind.

I gave up using rear cover scopemounts on my sks mainly because of the removal of the scopemount during cleaning.  I'm using the AKS Sidemount Scopemount now its almost the same as a mosin nagant mount its rock solid.

go to; www.polytechparts.com/    then click "shop now" then go to; "accessories/parts"       "AKM side mount #500-016"   $20

Bigbill, how does that side-mount actually mount to the rifle?  I'm having trouble imagining what it looks like since that site doesn't give any real info on it.

BTW, this might just go on that SKS you helped me fix!
When the whole world is crashing down around me, atleast I'll have my SKS.

Its a two piece mount thats similair to the one on the mosin nagant sniper.
The scope sits high so the reciever cover can be removed without touching/disturbing the scopemount/scope settings.  Its mounted rock solid.

Robert 357 they do go over a lot of mounts, but not the scoutscope mount. The scoutscope mount is mounted on the rear sight platform. You can remove the scope and the mount is notched to take the place of the sight. It is supposed to be solid and accurate, plus give faster target acquisition. But being that far forward I think you would lose a lot of fov. I know there is info from the manufacturer, but I prefer to get my info from someone that is not trying to sell me the item.

Bigbill what does it mount to, the receiver. I am assuming it needs to be drilled and tapped, which means I would have to order an 8-40 tap. It looks like it sits pretty high which usually slows down target acquisition.

Thanks for responding
