Author Topic: Stuck chamber adapter/How to get it out? (Read 795 times)

Good News/ Bad News. I got another Handi yesterday in 30-06. I figured it would be a great project rifle with my 7.62x25 chamber adapter. Oh Well. I took one shot and the chamber adapter stuck in the chamber like it was welded. I tried tight patches to try and push it out. Then I disassembled the lug and tapped on the ejector to drive it out, and the ejector ripped the rim off of the chamber adapter. It still wont come out, and I am not sure what to do. Would it be best at this point to just send it off to NEF before I do any more damage? Sure could use some help here.

You might try gently heating the outside of the barrel and then squirt some good penitrating oil into the breech then try a very tight patch again.

Robert, MCA uses broken shell extractors to remove their adapters, or maybe an email to em would help ya out.

Not saying this will work. I have been guilty of over using old cases while reloading. Now and then I get a case seperation. I use a slightly oversized bore brush. I push the brush through from the breech and pull the seperated case right out. This may work for you. At least, it's cheap.

I do the same thing with a chamber brush, push it straight in and pull it straight out without twisting it. You could also just run a tap into it and then put a bolt into the threads and tap it out from the front with the cleaning rod. Larry

Thanks Guys. I have the adapter out .....with your help, and I still have not had a reply from NEF for help that I requested last Thursday. We can see clearly who gets results around here and the vote certainly does not go to NEF. Thanks Guys.
What I ended up doing was a variation from what Larry posted. I used a tap & die and threaded it in gently....just 'snugged it up' so as not to put too much pressure on the chamber and cause damage, then I backed it off 1/2 turn. I also removed the scope-base so it would not act as a heat-sinc, removed the ejector parts so as not to damge the springs, and I heated the lug on my stove. Rather than find the right threaded bolt, I just left the tap in....one good rap with a heavy cleaning rod and it popped right out. Now I just need to figure out how to get the ejector spring back in and which way the little spring and button goes in. I am sure I can figure out the ejector spring....but I did not see which way the little button and spring came out.

Total Success. It was easy. So now....I am thinking maybe installing rifle sights for this extra 30-06 barrel for a back-up hunting rifle.
P.S. NO MORE CHAMBER ADAPTERS FOR ME! Sorry MCA....they are not worth the grief if they get stuck. Thank GOD that tis was in a firearm with a completely removeable barrel. This would have been an absolute nightmare if it was stuck in my P-17 Bolt rifle.

Hey Bama, I took all the springs and such out of the lug so they wouldnt get annealed.....screwed in a tap from the breech....just enough to snug it up....not too tight. Then I backed it off 1/2 turn, heated it on the stove-top, then I gave it one good tap with a heavy brass cleaning rod. It popped right out. I am very glad that this was in a single-shot rifle and that I could remove the barrel.

Next time you want a pop-squeek .30, just use a 100-120 gr cast bullet and 4-6gr of bullseye or red dot.

Yeah DP, I fool around with loads like that a lot. That is the main reason I got the 7.62x39 barrel when they came out. They have a .310 bore and heavy .308 bullets can be loaded really light. I have not tried any of these loads any further than 30 yds yet....I expect that they might tumble. But I can't remember ever shooting a deer further than 30 or so yards. Makes an excellent 'Urban Thumper'. So.....I don't really need the chamber adapter anymore, the 7.62x39 is a great little cartridge for efficiency.

You never mentioned how or if it actually shot?

It was from MCA up in Alaska. It seemed to shoot just fine. I on;y wanted it for close up stuff with heavy bullets and light loads. It did what I expected except for glueing itself into the chamber. 20 bucks is not a lot of money....but if you have to destroy it to get it out of the chamber and take the chance of ruining a good chamber.....it just don't pan-out.
