H&R 243 single shot Rifle conversion project
« on: September 12, 2005, 04:17:24 PM »
I have recently gotten the bug to shoot some Black Powder Cartridges.  I have purchased a 243 H&R Single Shot with an SP2 frame and I am looking at now purchasing the 38-55 barrel as an addition to this rifle.

I am wondering if I add this barrel :

1. Do I need to alter the forearm/add special forearm?
2. What sight options do I have for long range target shooting?
3. The Buttstock is set for a scope - do i need to alter it for a peep sight system ?

If you have any other tips or advices for me please go right on ahead  .....

Thanks in Advance

Howdy ma'am welcome to the group.

I am certainly not an expert, (and no doubt, should I be in error here, someone will step in with more accurate info) but I believe forearms are interchangeable, even though the actual rifles with the 38-55 barrels have a different stock and forearm.

If you shoot with iron or open sights, it is recommended that you do not use a Monte Carlo stock as would be found on your 243. A shotgun type stock, or a stock without the Monte Carlo cheekpiece works better with open sights. I have .357 mag with an aperture sight on a frame with a shotgun stock and a Mannlicher forend that is very comfortable to shoot this way (and I think looks sharp ).

You can see I have the rear aperture attached at the pre drilled and tapped rear scope mount holes. My sight has no target inserts, simply an aperture. Most folks would likely not consider this set up as an accurate long range shooter (and I do not either) but it works well for mid-ranges for me. (100-150 yds)

There are also different sights available for the longer ranges, a ladder type sight, and I've even seen a tang sight that was inletted into the buttstock.

There have been a number of threads about this very subject and can be searched through the 'search' option.

I tried to use it just now, but for some reason I can't seem to access it at the moment, but if you want to use it, check the FAQs and Stickies at the top of this forum and find how to use it (the search) then type in "long range sight" or whatever it is you want to get more info about.

Again, welcome to the group. Lots of great people here with great information.

Cheers
Kerry

I noticed this was your first post so.......Welcome aboard! Pull up a chair and kick up your feet.

Now on to your questions....
1. Do i need to alter the forearm or get a new one.
It depends on what model of 243 you have. If you have a synthetic stocked 243 then you will probably need another forearm for the 38-55 barrel. If your 243 has the wood stock and it is a bull barrel then you won't need another forearm.

2. What sight options do i have for long range target shooting?
i can't really help you here. Maybe some of the BP shooters could help you on this one,

3.The buttstock is set up for a scope. Do i need to alter it for a peep sight system.
You will need a straight comb stock. Or the shotgun style stock.

Hope this helped. Once again welcome to the board

(a lady wow NEF rifles are getting better all the time  )

1. you shouldn't have to alter the forearm  but if you did just get a new one (see answer 3)

2.the barrel you want to my knowledge does not come drilled and taped so iron sights are the only way (which sounds like what you want) there are a few people that have put tang sights on them and mounted them to the butt stock.

3. as for a stock yes you'll need a straight stile  even with the peep sight that comes on the barrel . a use shotgun stock set (butt stock and forearm) on here would sell for about $30  and that would fix your probiblum with the forearm too.

welcome to the forum i hope you stay a while enjoy and ask all the questions you want we're all here to help fellow handi owners.

P.S. oh and please pay no mind to our male egos .things can get a little testy sometimes (if you have brothers or a husban you'll understand)

have a great day ma'am

Welcome ma'am,

I have put the H&R peep sight on a 45-70 22" barrel & use a Monte Carlo stock. Since the sight is attached to the holes fore a scope rail it sits higher this is a Williams peep & H&R does carry them. The 38-55 barrel is tapped for this sight because it comes with one as a whole gun. The front sight is a dove tail type. Sights will not come with the barrel if you order it from H&R as an addition to your frame. Don't know what your LONG range is & I don't know how much this setup will give you but others may add more. Hope this helps
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
