Would a Malin in .30 carbine be a good rifle?

I was thinking that a Marlin in .30 carbine would make a nice combination. Fill it up with hollow points and it would make a nice rifle with little recoil.

Anyone else think that this is a good idea?

Marlin made the model 62 lever action .30 M1 Carbine back in the 1960's.

It had limited popularity for the same reasons as the US M1 Carbine: light, handy, convenient, low recoil, readily available ammunition, fun to shoot.

It was bad and did not sell well for the same reasons as the US M1 Carbine:  marginal power for deer-sized game (illegal in some states), too expensive for casual plinking, and very limited accuracy range.

It would be fun to own and shoot, I guess, but of limited practical use when other, more suitable chamberings are available.

Ridge Runner You never said what you'd be using the rifle for.
I think instead of the 30 the 357mag would be a very nice choice.
Cheap to shoot very cheap to reload and low recoil. Enough of power for deer at ranges up to 100 yrds.

30 Carbine out lasted its Military use[the round]though still used in many countries abroad.As a pistol round it is excellent though.

Intrepid is right of course.  I used one of my 10" T/C barrels in .30M1 to shoot IHMSA silhouette using 165-grain RCBS cast bullets, shot a lot of 39s with it.  Highly accurate with cast bullets ( 1 moa scoped) and I lost very few rams with it on my range.  Oddly, for the most accurate loads I used RL-7 for 1500 fps.

I was looking at a Marlin lever gun in .357 MAG and it just came to me that the .30 carbine would provide more punch with little recoil.

I have a M1 carbine and love shooting it.

I just thought that the .30 carbine round would make a nice combination with a Marlin lever action.

Can't beat that .357 for fun shooting and the diffrence between it and the .30 carbine is very small.

The 357 magnum in an 1894C has quite a bit more "punch" potential than the 30 carbine round. You can load it lighter for plinking, or shooting smaller game, or load it to it's maximum for an honest 100+ yard deer rifle.

Even with full house loads the 1894C has a powder puff recoil that even the youngest shooter can manage with ease.

A 30 carbine load would be fun for plinking. I would personally never use that for any hunting above small game.
Some have mentioned using the 38/357. That would be a great choice. I have a 44 mag and shoot more specials than I do mags. I load my own so it's cheap for me all the way around.
The 30 just isn't much of a multi-purpose weapon. The other choices give you everything the 30 has and alot more.

It seems to me that if you need to shoot it with two hands you also should get the benefit of rifle power. The 30-30 on up is the way to go with a carbine.

As an aside. If you can find it get Jeff Cooper 's article "The Carbine Compromise" (Guns and Ammo Oct. 1966).
