YOU GOTTA READ THIS
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:11:47 PM »
Just came back from the Evenston WY Vou and had (as usual) a great time.

BUT!
At the range, a rifle did not fire and no one could get it to fire.  The shooter was sure he loaded it with powder, still nothing worked.  The shooter put the rifle in it's case and layed it down facing down range at the firing line.

FIVE MINUTES later, the rifle went off putting a prb through the case and down range.

I would make a bet that the shops in Evenston sold out on those air pressure stuck ball removers.

Whew!  Good thing no one was hurt.

What to learn from this?

I guess, keep the thing pointed in a safe direction until you find some way of neutralizing the powder charge.  I think I will be getting a flintlock adapter for my CO2 discharger.

Crowfeather...given the extremely unusual circumstances of this...and I ask this question very delicately...wondering if you're relating a story about this event that was circulating around at the vous.....or did you actually happen to personally be standing right there and witness this specific event,  and know without a doubt it laid there for 5 minutes, then discharged by itself?

Thanks

Roundball,

It was relayed to me, I arrived at the range a few minutes later.  I spoke to approx. 15 people who were there and 5 minutes was the consensus of all.

If your are interested, I can give you the name of the booshway and his email address.  (This is not meant to be a Smart a-- remark, I just thought you might want to ask questions I don't know the answers to)

Yes, it is interesting that an ember could last that long.  I think part of it was the hot day (approx. 85-90) and that the rifle was in a heavy rifle case.

CF, I'm not doubting for a minute that you're telling it as you know it...I was just curious to know if you had actually witnessed it or were relaying something you'd been told had happened, etc

Whatever the case may be, the old rule as stated by Black Jacque is always valid...."keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction".

THAT IS WIERD, but wierd things happen and sometimes people get hurt.
A few tails that are documented truth. I took the reports myself.
A roofer on a scaffold thought he was stung in the chest by a bee.
He reached under his shirt and felt the lump and noticed something in his shirt pocket.
A spent .22 r.f. bullet!
At a police match at an outdoor range on a sunny hot summer day.. a shooter was loading magazines for a relay. His ammo and mags were on the bench in the sun for the entire morning.
He dumped a box of .45 a.c.p into his hand and two rounds went off!
We think a ctg. rim hit a primer and set it off causing nasty burns and cuts to the shooters palm.
A motorist driving down a busy city 4 lane heard a loud thump on his windsheild which made a small divot in the glass.
At a mall he got out to see the 'rock' chip and caught on the wiper blade was a spent .38 spl. bullet.
This next one is on me!
Shooting my zouave with 600 grain solids I forgot to powder the thing.
No screw puller so I took out the musket nipple and dribbled a bit of 4fg in and managed to get a tad under the ball.
I capped up and pointed the muzzle at the wood pile ten feet away to stop the boolit.
BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bullet flew out, I could see it hit pin oak cord wood, bounced off and cracked me square in the forehead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OUUUUUUUCH.
Made a lump for sure.
Me's a much smarter fellow now!
Like to have put my lights out!
I still have the offending slug.
600 grains hurts.

This past 4th of July a guy in my city took a length of pipe, plugged one end with spark plug socket, filled it with gun powder and BBs and put a piece of cannon fuse in the hole of the socket , then lit her up. The socket entered just under the armpit , traversed at a down ward angle, through several organs and lodged near a kidney. Missed the heart but got both lungs so he lingered for a few days.Off the subject but still interesting, in a way.

"Hey guys, hold my beer, and watch this!"

Did the guy use smokeless powder?  Did he even try to proof it, before holding it?

Well atleast the shooter had the sense to leave his gun pointing downrange even if in the rifle case.
