Wooden Arrow Supplies
« on: September 12, 2005, 06:15:33 AM »
Does anyone have recommendations as to where to buy supplies for making your own wooden arrows? I've read several articles and books on arrow making and I would like to give it a try. I'm just starting out in this so any help or things to do or not do, would be greatly appreciated.
Also - what type of wood and diameter would you recommend for a 45 #  recurve?
Let me know if you need additional information as I'm not sure what else information to provide.

Thank you.

Kustom King archery in Merrillville, Indiana is a mail order supply house, that supplies shafting, feathers, etc., as well as "how to" books.  You might also get a copy of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine.  They have a lot of suppliers that advertise there.  when I used to run a traditional archery shop, I built a lot of custom arrows.  I started with cedar, but switched to ramin wood, for toughness.  I was able to get a lot of high spine weights in 5/16" shafting, and built a LOT of arrows in that diameter for bows from 45-60 lbs.

Kustom-King is my favorite.  I've also ordered from 3-Rivers.

For a 45# recurve, I'd start with 11/32 in the 40-45# spine range.

Wooden arrows are pretty straight forward unless you want to get fancy.  I use Minwax stain and dip in gloss poly.  Fletch with Bohning Fletching tape and Duco.
