survivor in .308

Just ordered a Survivor in .308. Was wanting to know if there are any tips or tricks that I should be aware of? Ammo it likes? Any opinions on scopes in the $100-$200 range?

get a recoil pad and HANG ON.my survivor kicks just as much as my savage 300 mag.as far as ammo i havent got that far yet i was stupid and put a reddot scope on it for brush hunting and its horrible.ammo i have tried has been rem 150-180gr cor-lokt.

Have you shot these kind of single shot rifles before?  I didn't before I first got mine and I got very fusterated. Different world from bolt action rifles.  There is a slight learning curve, like pulling all the way through the trigger, and maintaining as consistant line up-scope to target-to rest. But you can learn a lot by shooting them. Just keep your patience, if you get a little worked up.
Like Varminter said check out the FAQ's and look back through previous topics that interest you, and feel free to ask questions. There are a lot of good guys around here.
Scopes-Varminter mentioned the Meullers. I don't own one yet, but I have heard nothing but excellent things about them. Also in your price range you might want to check out the Bushnell Legend series.
If you can find them the old Simmons Whitetail Expedition scopes are an awesome buy. So are the old Atec's.
What kind of shooting/hunting are you using your 308 for?

I have two of them now.  I bought one for my youngest daughter and liked it so much that I bought one for my oldest daughter.  I use weaver quad lock medium rings with a 3x9x40 Scope.  I added a Small Size Sims Vibration Laboratory Recoil Slip on Pad.
   I use a 130 gr Hornady Soft Point, Winchester Brass, WLR Primer, 38.3gr Hodgdon Varget, 2.762 OAL.  It shoots straight and is easy on the shoulder.

I have owned a Handi before in .45-70 loved it. I'm not really into bench shooting. In my opinion you don't realy learn much shooting that way. I think that it is better to shoot in all types of situations prone, standing, sitting, uphill, downhill, all at a wide array of distances. I have friends who can shoot sub MOA groups all day off the bench but take them in the woods and they are lost when faced with more realistic shooting.

Shooting off a bench isn't like practicing for hunting in the feild,but,it will show you how well your rifle will shoot,and will allow you to learn your trigger and trajectory of your load.

I had a Survivor a while back...it was accurate with a few loads,but,I hated the stock on it and ordered a set of Cinnamon laminates from NEF to put on it,and did all the tune-up tricks to it that are found in the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum....I sold it to my next door neighbor and he has taken a few good bucks with it using the good ole Winchester 150 grain Power Points...he doesn't reload,and doesn't want to,since this load will give him 1/2" groups all day long.I shot Federal Match ammo in it for the first Postal Match here...didn't do to bad with the groups either..

A good scope for the money....pick up a Simmons Aetec or a Simmons Whitetail Expedition...both are really good scopes for the money and can be had for around $125 if you don't like them... a Leupold VX-1 for around $200..and order a set of Burris Signature Zee rings for it when you do.
