Safety alert: Rottweil brenneke-style slugs

We shot 20 gauge Rottweil slugs today in our Mossberg 500 and got pressure signs. After the first shot the action could not be opened. I thought it was a fluke, rapped the action and got it open, and examined the gun. It looked OK. The second shot did the same thing, and the shell was stuck in the chamber.

The gun is in good condition and fires Federal slugs just fine. There are no signs of damage to the gun after firing the Rottweils, but I recommend you avoid them.

I had a batch of 20ga Rottweil Brenneke slugs back in '88 that the brass even split to the rim in my 1100 slug gun. :eek:  They are definitely hot loads, but I think their brass has always been weaker than the Remington, Winchester and Federals and therefore expands more.

My son shoots the Rottweil Brenneke's out of his 12ga 870 with excellent results. I think they are still the best smooth bore slug on the market. Good luck in figuring them out.

I just bought 6 boxes of Rottweil Blitz slugs to try.  Dunhams has them on sale for $1.99/box for 12ga 2 3/4.  Not bad.  After reading about them online I see where they have a shorter brass base than many other shells.  This is probably why they expand/split more in some guns.  

This year I'm going to try a stupid Mossberg Persuader 500 for deer at 10-30 yards here in Michigan.  It makes 2" groups easy @50 yards with a Millet red dot scope on it.  Oh, and Dunhams has Sluggers on sale for $1.89..  I'd be embarrassed to say how many boxes of those I bought..  -  Joe

In my original post I was referring to the 3" shells. I have since tried the 2 3/4" shells and found no pressure problems in this gun. The spec for these has a lower pressure than the 3" shells.
