Creating a new wildcat
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:28:01 AM »
I've been stymied recently every time I try and find an appropriate cartridge with my prefered cal/performance combination for the chosen action.
I was chatting with a mate and the pair of us started to get silly ideas.
The case won't be too much trouble once it's chambered in a rifle, just necking up and fire forming as it'll be an improved design with, say, 35 degree shoulders and minimum taper walls.
But it has to be chambered first.
Basically what I need to know is who makes reamers for chambers?
What specs and info would I need to give them in order to have one made up?
Do I need a cartridge that's already formed?
And who makes custom dies for wildcats?
Do I need to send them a completed case?
Has anyone here done this and what's been their experience?

I don't use many of their reamers, but if you go to www.clymertool.com and click on reamer design, you can see the dimensions of most of their reamers and modify them to suit your needs. Another way is what I do - get Dave Manson (www.mansonreamers.com) to fax me a drawing of the reamer closest to what I want. I'll change what I feel like I want to change, fax it back, and usually have my reamer in about a week or two.

Custom ground reamers are available from http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com, http://www.mansonreamers.com/, Clymer, Forgreens and others.
Pacific Tool has a printable reamer diagram that you can fill out with the dimensions you want and send it in. The person there to talk to is Dave Kiff, I have heard that he is the go-to guy for custom reamers. I have used PTG reamers but have not spoken to him directly.
You can have custom dies made by http://www.ch4d.com/ and I believe RCBS and LEE will also make custom dies for you if you send a print and/or cases.
I have made my own reamers and form dies and reloading dies, it's a bunch of work but it's fun to make a one-of-a-kind.
You need to know what case you will start with and what you want it to end up as. You can chamber a rifle without formed cases and then fire form cases to fit. It's hard to describe the process.
The other trick is to get load data for a wildcat, you have to find something with similar case capacity FOR THE SAME BORE SIZE and reduce that and work up CAREFULLY. Good reference for that is PO Ackleys books "Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders Vol 1 and 2". One of them has an article on how to make reloading dies also.
Wildcats are also addictive, you can't have just one so watch out.

You can get anything you want if you`re willing to pay for it. You`re looking at abt. $250 for a good barrel, acouple of hunderd for the reamer, another $100 or so to get it put togeather and around $125 for dies plus the action if you don`t already have it. Those are US dollars.
