7mm-08 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw for whitetail?
« on: September 24, 2005, 01:34:52 AM »
Being relatively new to rifle hunting I was wondering about 7-08 rounds.  I received my latest E-Blast e-mail from Midway yesterday and they had some pretty good deals on 7-08 rounds...Here's the specifics:

Federal Premium Vital-Shok High Energy Ammunition 7mm-08 Remington 140 Grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw Box of 20 for $11.45/box

This seems like a steal for 7-08 factory ammunition but I have questions.

Is a trophy bonded bear claw bullet a bad choice for whitetail?

Will this round expand upon impact or just blast through the animal with minimal expansion?

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,
Mike

Search Midway for bear claw and read the reviews. There are no reviews for your loaded ammo, but plenty of reviews for other calibers and loose bullets. Looks like five stars all the way. This one seems most relevant to your question:

  Review:
Shot a spikehorn buck at 50 yards last month with this bullet factory Federal Premium load). My Howa 6.5x 55 is not finnicky when it comes to different factory loads. All loads have shot well within hunting accuracy. Before hunting I was a little worried that the 140gr Trophy Bonded was too much bullet on a smaller deer, but it proved me wrong by opening up nicely blowing up the heart and leaving a modest exit wound breaking two ribs on the exit side. Deer screemed off like it was hit bad then crashed 10-15 yards away. I did not take the time to get a five shot group before the season. I only sighted in. So I cannot comment on its accuracy.
