Fun to shoot?  Hey, my 454 Casull is an FA ported 7.5" barrelled item and I'm here to tell ya that "fun to shoot" is a relative term!!  I'd like to have a Ruger Alaskan to impress my friends but in fact I'd probably never shoot it!!

I'll pass.  I've got no need to simply try to impress someone else.  It's not gonna be an awfully accurate revolver with that short of a bbl and sight radius.  It's not going to be very user friendly for any amount of range time.  I see it as a gun most buyers of it will simply buy as something to impress others with.  If you want one, I'd also wait a bit.  Just like the Dirty Harry wannabees  and all those that hurrifly bought a .454 when they first came out, many will hate the recoil/eport and trade it off fairly quickly.  used market on these will be here rather quickly I'm guessing.

The caliber the Alaskan begs for is the .480 Ruger---not as violent as the .454---but still quite formidable in its own right.

I've been waiting pretty anxiously to handle one of these.  I think it would make a pretty handy .45 Colt.  If I do get one, I doubt it would see very many 454 rounds, if any.

2" 454 would be a heck of a way to start a fire

he he he...   I Just got mine!!!  $579 at Sportsmen's Warehouse in Reno.  Did I need it ?   But of course  :) .   Will I shoot it ?  You bet... with 45 Colts,  I hope not with 454's.  But I will be carrying it loaded with Casull's this summer while cruising around Gane's Creek AK,  detecting for gold nuggets.   Last summer carried my 44 mag SRH w/7.5" barrel.  Never took it out of the holster, but did see alot of black bears around.  One comment, the Alaskan is way smoother than the SRH (dry firing at least).

Cheers !!!!

msorenso : Imagine a Super Redhawk with the barrel cut completely off, a front sight added to the extended frame, and a hogue mono grip, chambered only in 454 casull or 480 ruger.  No scope ring cuts are present to mar the otherwise businesslike appearance and away you go.  Just the thing for the last ditch backpacker or guide in Alaska who finds himself (Herself) at arms length (with no rifle or scattergun) from a heavy beast that intends to do them harm.

If you don't find yourself in Alaska I'm sure full house loads could clear benches at your local range of all unsecured sundries  (e.g. targets, brass, spotting scopes, onlookers etc...)

Well I had mine out on Saturday... he he he....  Put 120 rounds through it....  100 45 Colts - 50 cowboy loads, and 50 moderate loads (250 gr. ~ 900 fps. 425 ft lbs - and 20 moderate 454 Casull loads (Winchester 250 Gr.  loads of a little over 1000 ft. lbs of energy, similar to a hot 45 +P really).  Summary would be forget the cowboy loads, you can definitely go hotter without discomfort.  The 454's were actually quite enjoyable, with the gun recoiling over my head on each shot... he he he...  Not plinkers, for sure, but a "blast" nonetheless.  Of course the heavy 454's go 50 to 80% more energy, definitely a whole new category....  I still hope I'll never have to pull the trigger on one of them....  but I figure if it's a choice between gettin' eaten or a sore/broken wrist,  kaboom it is...

Cheers !!!

P.S.  I paid $569 at Sportsmen's Warehouse in Reno, NV.

Before the Ruger Alaskan came out, I had a custom made Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. Call the Super Streethawk. It was shortened to 2 1/2 inches and had a trigger and action job, it also had a bobbed hammer and the cylinder was worked to accept moon clips to shoot 45 Win Mags. I shot the gun with hot loaded 454 casull rounds all the time. It was not as bad as some have made it out to be. I lot less recoil than I would of thought. I sold it to my hunting buddy when I got my 4 inch 500MAG. He loves shooting the 454 Casull rounds also.  :D

I'll be picking one up when I get back home to Alaska. I'm working in Canada right now so I'm drooling over pictures for now
I really like shooting my uncle's 7-1/2" 454. It has the standard Super Redhawk grips on it. I'm anxious to try out those new Hogues grips. I plan on loading it up with some 360 grainers for camping/fishing/hunting. I'll post a quick review when I pick mine up.

I've got my dealer putting us on the distributers "wants" list for one and truly would love to get one BUT..I almost missed the barrel length limit in Colorado being 4" minimum, soooo I don't know now.  Unless Colorado does like a couple of other states and goes from the firing pin to the barrel end then I'll have to back out of the Ruger plans and get a Raging Bull 454SS5M.  Looks like it's the next up in barrel length with 5".  The SRH .454 's are 7 1/2" & 9"  which are too long IMHO.  What does everyone else think???

Take Care

:cb2: 7.5" Ruger. If you get the Taurus you'll always wish you had gotten the Ruger. Especially when you compare quality.

I had kind of written the Alaskan off as novelty/specialty item and had no plans on getting one------but after drooling over the gun porn in the Oct issue of Guns magazine---I think this is back on my gotta have list.

Now if I could ever see one in the flesh----the places around here are usually pretty good about getting all the new stuff in---but lately its been kinda bad-----they had the new Mini's in right away-----they just got a Frontier in last week(too bad it was in an unusable caliber for that gun--.300 WSM)---and no Alaskan.

They finally got the GP100 in that I've been lusting for years and finally decided to take the plunge--stainless 4'' full lug----which I promptly put on lay-a-way. Ususally when I was ready to buy one---they were out of stock or would have 2 6inch ones and a 3incher but no 4----when a 4 would come along--I'd be broke at the time----now it all came together.

Speaking of the Frontier----if they came out with a stainless version---I'd jump on one of those right away too----I'll take a stainless one in 7mm-08 please.

Hey Omaha, a couple of weeks ago the Lincoln Scheels had one.  I don't remember the price though.  Ya could call and see if they still have it.  (I'm assuming you live in or near Omaha, NE.)

Been awhile since I've been in the Lincoln store---ever since the Omaha store opened----the Lincoln store saw fit to jack up their prices.

If you can make it to the Sioux Falls Scheels----they have some great deals in there from time to time. Might be going up there this weekend as a matter of fact--have quite a few friends up there. All depends on the ex's schedule and how much time I get with my daughter----more kid time=less gun time. The kid comes first.
