Alcohol swab!
« on: September 19, 2005, 06:00:08 PM »
I stopped on the way to work this morning and shot the Omega a few times and tried something different. I was shooting 80 grains of 777 ffg weighed with the 250 grain shockwave with the variflame primer system and small rifle primers.

Before loading I swabbed the barrel with an alcohol patch and then popped a couple caps and swabbed with spit patch and dry patch before loading as I usually do.

I had previosly sighted this load to hit 3" high at 100 yards for my first shot.  The following shots would then hit in the bull.

I was surprized when the first shot cut dead center where it had been 3" high before. I was even more surprized when the second shot cut the first.

I then proceded to jerk the third shot 2 inches to the right, I felt it when I squezed it off.

I loaded up one last load and low and behold it cut the first two shots. I was pretty impressed. I had about a 2" group with one I pulled bad.

My question is do any of you guys use the alcohol swap and how does it usually affect your point of impact with your first shot and your follow up shots.

I typically shoot my first shot off a clean barrel after popping a few caps to clear the oil, spit patch and dry patch load and then spit patch and dry patch in between shots.

Im thinking I was high on my previous sight in because of rem oil still in my barrel from storage.  Any insight in to this would be greatly appreciated.

Im going to try the alcohol swab some more latter in the week.

Alcohol swabs are great. Dries by itself, so only one patch needed. I have not noticed any difference in POI.
