375 JDJ scope suggestions
« on: September 13, 2005, 11:59:40 AM »
I have just started shooting the 375 jdj on my encore. i put an old 4x redfield pistol scope on. we previously used the scope on a 44 mag, 30 herret on tc contender, etc. after a few rounds (30 - 40) in the 375, a lens developed a small crack.

the crack may have developed because it was an old scope, but the 375 is big!

so, any preferences on scope and mounting 2,3,4 rings, for the big canons?

I think i would like to stick with something in the 4x range, i don't really like the variable magnifications becasue the eye relief cuts down so much.

this topic, or something similar may be in the archives, if you know of it, let me know and i will continue searching.

thanks for suggestions

I have a leupold 2x on my contender barrel.  I think the 2x is too small

I have a leupold 2x on my contender barrel. I think the 2x is just right.

Why? Well, because I reserve my 375 for larger game at moderate distances - say not more than 100-125 yards. At that distance a moose shows up pretty well. I can understand those who use their 375s for medium game at longer ranges having a problem with it though.

Perhaps most important, the barrel is drilled for 6 holes and set up with a 3-ring weaver-style base. On top of that are 3 Warne rings securing the scope. It's not going anywhere!

I have had a Leupold 2X and 4X as well as the T/C 2.5-7X Recoil Proof scopes on my .375JDJ Contender barrel.  All have worked well.

I've used a Burris 5X on my 375JDJ for the past 17 years with no problems. THis is with Weaver base and 3 Burris Zee rings.

I've used Leupold 2.5-8x and Burris 2-7x on my 14".375 JDJ Contender barrel. It is Magnaported and recoil and muzzlel flip with 270 gr full loads is pretty stout, but I have not noticed any problem with either scope.  pg

I have a .375 JDJ on a Contender and I put a Burris Posi-lock Balistiplex 2x to 7x.  I use a weaver base and use weaver 4x4 rings.  I have never had any problem with this set up and I will use this rig this year in the woods for white tail and black bear.

thanks for the useful information!

only at graybeards can we get such honest opinions, thanks for the service Graybeard!

I have just bought a leupold 4x. i think i will send the barrel to ssk to have them put their TSOB base and rings on. seems to be a fair price for the setup.

any load data you folks have would also be appreciated. I am starting out from scratch now, have found some stuff in Hornady's book and TC's load manual.

thanks

Todd,  enjoy your new "cannon!"

I'm using the TC's recoil proof 2 1/2 x 7 scope on my 375 JDJ and it's working fine.

Killed two whitetails at 170 and 190 yards with it this fall already.

I'm loading the 220 gr. Hornady flatpoint at JD Jones's suggestion.

I tried H4895 but accuracy was nothing to write about.  When I tried AA2520 I'm now shooting near 1" groups at 100 yards.  I don't like to give the load grains cause every gun is different, but I'm 1 grain under the Alient maximum and getting just over 2100 fps.

Try a B&L 2x6 as the eye relief shrinks VERY little at 6X. I had a B&L 2x6 on my 375JDJ and it wasgreat but now itson a 6TCU that I shoot 1/2 size sillywets with. Shooting from the creedmoor position I can turn it up to 6X and no tunnel vision.
