Best Sight-In Distance for 45-70?
« on: September 20, 2005, 06:36:25 AM »
I ordered a scout scope the other day for my 1895 (22") and I'm wondering what sighting distance everyone uses.  (1900 fps for the load I'm sighting in for)

Using the PointBlank program and the Speer 400 gr. flat nose bullet @1900 fps (the database doesn't have sectional density for a 405 gr. bullet) with a 6" kill zone, it spits out that maximum point blank range is 179 yards and the rifle shoot be sighted to shoot dead on at 153 yards.  Interpoalting off the graph it draws, you should be 3" high at 100 yards and will be 6.7" low at 200 yards.

So, sight it in to shoot 3" high at 100 yards and you should be able to hold dead on out to 180 yards or so, at which point it will be hitting 3" low.
